Checking your car before a long trip

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

Off course this is the yuletide season and traveling rates have increased tremendously by over 80%. The interesting thing about this is that individuals now prefer to travel in their private cars in order not to miss out on some quality travel hours with their family and loved ones.
Knowing that your vehicle is a mechanism, you really have to do a random check before deciding to use your private car. Sometimes technicians may not be readily available.

Let’s see what to check

Your tires

Checking your vehicle tires before embarking on a journey goes beyond just looking to see if they look air tight. The ideal practice is to use a gauge. If you are here in Nigeria, a proper air tire pressure is 2.8bar (that is 40 psi). This check should be done along the four tires. Make sure your tires are not expired.

Oil gauge

This should be easy as a dash board light should indicate when the oil in your engine needs to be topped. But just in case the light no longer comes on, use the manual gauge usually close to the top cylinder (the top cylinder is just the engine top). Check and make sure the oil is adequate.

Check the water/coolant level in your radiator

This check is also pretty easy. Opening up and refilling the radiator shouldn’t take more than 10minutes.

Check for flammables

Try not to have flammables in your car rear (boot) flammables like gas or petrol could be very dangerous in a sunny day at high speed.

Finally

Raise your car to about 60km/h and pay attention to the engine sound while keeping it steady. Increase a little while also paying attention. A good engine sound isn’t so difficult to notice.

Cheers.. Travel safe..

One of the best checks you can do on your car, before a long trip, is to check the oil. Based on your vehicle's make and model, it needs between 3-5 quarts. When looking at the dipstick, keep in mind that you may need to restart your engine a few times to get all the oil OUT of the stick and also you can get more info for look up VIN number there. To avoid this, you could use a funnel or siphon tube to direct the oil towards an end point. In addition, make sure that none of it drips back into the dipstick area.
