Exploring Melbourne - Inside the State Library Victoria

While in Melbourne, Australia I took a little detour to the State Library Victoria near Flinders Street as I had heard this is one of the original buildings left in the city. A bonus is that they usually have a selection of exhibitions on offer that can be viewed by walking the corridors that spiral up to the top of this piece of architecture. Founded in 1854, State Library Victoria has been an active part of Melbourne's literary and cultural landscape and continues to be a popular landmark in the city, so it made sense I should have a gander myself.

If I'm honest I didn't know much about the library so it was great to learn about the history surrounding it. This is Australia's oldest public library and one of the first free public libraries in the world. The founders believed that having access to knowledge via the books would develop and improve the city, as well as offering a home for the historical information regarding the city. As a photographer I especially enjoyed looking at the different posters and promotional materials that they've produced throughout the years to promote the city and the different landmarks nearby. I took a few pictures of the posters and artworks that I thought looked nice on the eye, it was cool how they had the caption "Take a Kodak" on the bottom of the promotional posters. Those were the days! haha

Obviously this is a library so I had to be fairly considerate when taking pictures. Overall I was impressed by the views from inside the building and the architecture, the ceiling was a nice feature. It was nice to learn a little about the city and soak in the atmosphere here, I recommend visiting if you have some spare time. Here are a few pictures.
