"KROMA" Cambodia's Stamp on Culture , History & Heritage.

in #travel7 years ago

The Khmer Kroma and its various patterns are ubiquitous, the stand out among other scarfs of similar sorts. They are part of the Cambodian history and a legacy passed through generations.
Originally kromas were woven in the countryside. The kroma was a fabric that Khmer women wove themselves. They used to collect cotton (samley) that was then spread before being soaked in rice for 2 or 3 days. Parts of the threads were then tinged in red before starting the weaving. The rich, on the other hand, preferred to use silk because the fabric would remain cool in the summer, but also to distinguish themselves from the peasants.

The Kroma gave a reflection of status.

The traditional kroma, with small red and white – or blue and white tiles, is available these days in a multitude of colors as you can see through out Angkor Temples

But, of course, Khmers first see this scarf as a piece of legacy, claiming their Culture and Heritage to Cambodia by wearing the Kroma.

Wearing a Kroma symbolizes a heritage and cultural backgrounds of a true Cambodian / (Khmer).
Woven from cotton or silk, this knitted cloth called (Kroma) have been a (Cambodian) Trade mark many many centuries ago and still is today.
Although its not nearly as popular as the other pieces of clothing or garments. This traditional Khmer kroma has international appeal. "When foreigners come to visit Cambodia, they sometimes pick up the Khmer style Kromas for gifts or souvenirs or just because its a universal piece of clothing that goes with just about all.

These multi-purpose kromas can be found in just about every Cambodian household. Adults make use of the kromas in many ways, from washing up to being belts or even simple sun shields as seen worn by khmers through out the country.

Even if we tend to remember more recent historical facts, it is important to overcome the legacy of those dramatic years and remember that the krama has older origins.
The Kroma is the foremost symbol of a people whose courage and dignity has allowed them to overcome the very challenges it has suffered. This piece of fabric accompanied " Khmer" Cambodians throughout their history.
This simple scarf alone represents many values which are attached to the hearts of " Khmer" Cambodians
