Travel Diary #3: Uluwatu Temple on Lovers' Cliff and Breath-taking Sunset at Jimbaran Beach
Uluwatu Temple
After visiting Tanah Lot, I headed straight for Uluwatu Temple. It turned out to be quite a bad idea to be on the road around lunch time as the traffic was horrendous, but the temple was worth it in the end.
Uluwatu temple is built on an ocean cliff overlooking the ocean. The cliff is also called the Lovers' Cliff. Legend has it that there was a man and woman who were deeply in love but were forbidden to be with each other. They came to this place and took their lives by jumping off the cliff and into the sea together. That's the Balinese version of Romeo and Juliet, and I can't help thinking that this might be slightly more romantic than taking poison. Of course, both ways are probably very painful and so highly unrecommended!
Sunset at Jimbaran Beach
The final stop of the day was Jimbaran beach. I was excited to visit because I had heard about the fantastic sunset views available here. On my friend's recommendation, I had made a reservation with Lia Cafe so that I had front-row seats to the entire thing. Not cheap, but it was worth it!
Everyone eagerly waiting for the sunset, armed and ready with a few drinks ready to go down the chute.
The photos really doesn't do it justice. For a while, the sun's rays turned the horizon into an unearthly painting of deep indigo and rich scarlet. Simply fantastic.
And to top it all off, the food wasn't half bad either! That's all for now. =)
