Who Knew a Roadtrip Could Be So Exciting!? - Great Ocean Road
My husband and I recently took a much needed trip to over to Melbourne on the East coast of Australia. We weren’t there for long so we wanted to make the most of every minute. Melbourne is a culturally diverse city with plenty to see and do. From fine dining, endless musuems and art exhibitions, quirky shops, gorgeous beaches, an open range zoo, to some of Australia’s hottest night spots.
Given that, I did not expect a road to be one of the trip highlights. But in fact it was.
Having hired a car we headed first for the twelve apostles. They are huge rock structures, that over thousands of years have broken away from the shore, standing tall, looking pretty damn magnificent. Due to time and erosion, alas there are not exactly twelve of them anymore but instead about nine or ten of them, but they still take your breath away sitting along the cliff shoreline.
This beautiful section of Australian coast line attracts alot of tourists, so the down side is it can make it hard to get the perfect photo, but even with the hustle and bustle of tourists there is still such a peace to the area that you feel.
I do particularly love this panoramic photo (despite the lines and tourists on the end) as I think it captures the magnitude of the spot.
Oh and of course you have got to have the obligatory tourist photos ;)

From the twelve apostles we headed down the windy road that is Great Ocean Road which hugs the bottom coast of Australia. Now when I say windy, I mean it! It feels like for the most part you are zig-zagging your way down the road. With so many tight bends it can be nerve wrecking (espescially as the passenger and not in control), but for the driver can be quite fun! With some part of the road winding through forrests with cliffs one side of the road ro next minute you have the ocean and a cliff to the side. Both adding the element of danger with the risk of rock fall at any moment with no where to swerve into except the ocean.
(No, not the best pic, but best I could get on the move!)
Despite the danger, which is very slight if you stick to the road rules and speed limits, the road is extremely picturesque, with so many beautiful quaint little beachside towns along the way to stop in for a bite or a cup of coffee.
So if you find yourself in Victoria, Australia, definitely make the time for a quick road trip down the Great Ocean Road!
Its such an iconic trip. I still haven't gotten around to it. Your pics are lovely
Thank you. If you ever get around to it, it is definitely worth it, especially if you have time on your side to explore all the seaside towns, wish I had more time to do so!
Indeed. When I do it I plan on making it an entire trip on its own and meandering my way along.
