Come with me to The Old town...in Klaipeda/Origin legend

If you come with me,
I will take you,
to the proud center of Klaipeda...the Old town.

Full of stories to be told and many wars withstood...it has its beautiful secrets revealed to us, if you know just where to look, they will find you.

There are many explanations and stories where and how our cities name 'Klaipeda'/'Caloypede' came to be, but this historically based legend, first time mentioned in 1413, in a letter by Vytautas, the Grand Duke of Lithuania is reaching the wall in a statue form of a corner building, hidden in the middle of the Old town, not yet known much to the masses.

It's new, somebody in our government decided to keep decorating our city and be loud and proud about it and even show off a little bit to the tourists.

If the weather is nice, the tourists start creepin' out of the shadows, cameras flashin'.

This is one of those spots.
It's a sneaky destination to be found, but those who love more educational ways in life, will appreciate this one.

So here's how the story goes...

"Lithuanian legend tells of an ancient tribe, who worshiped the sun and fire, that once lived along the banks of the Akmena River. The time came when the tribe needed to find a new place to settle, so they sent out their bravest hunters - two fair-haired and blue-eyed brothers, Deer and Wolf - in search of a place for the tribes new home. The brothers made their way along the tracks of wild animals and over the oak covered hills when finally from the top of a hill they saw the majestic blue sea stretching before them. They wished to reach the sea so that they could greet her, but between the brothers and the sea lay a boggy marshland. Each brother took a different route to try and find a way around the marsh.

Deer reached the shore and decided that here, where the yellow sand touched the sea, he would bring his tribe, but Wolf, who had followed the river disappeared forever. As much as Deer called and searched for Wolf all that he found was a single footprint slowly sinking into the muddy bog. Deer returned to his tribe and brought them to the new found area to live and for generations the stories of Deer's adventures and the tale of Wolf's fruitless quest were told. As time passed much of the story was forgotten except for the part where Wolf was lost forever and all that was found was his "lost footprint" [klai[dziota]peda].

The wall is decorated with this stone tablet, which has three 'pages' of this legend, each peace in a different language, one of them being an english version. At the bottom you see a statue by the wall of a single footpring, dedicated to Wolf from the legend, who was never found or heard of again...

I think the symbolism of it all is great, because the wall usd to be plain and now it tells a beautiful story for people to know and enjoy.
