Kaprun high mountain reservoirs
The Kaprun high mountain reservoirs are located above the village of Kaprun in the State of Salzburg, Austria. The two lakes are part of a pumped storage power plant at an altitude of
1672 meters (5489 ft) and 2036 meters (6680 ft). They are held back by three dams:
Moosersperre (height 107m 351ft / Length 494m 1620ft)
Drossensperre (height 112m 367ft / Length 357m 1171ft)
Limbergsperre (height 120m393ft / length 357m 1171ft)
You can park your car at a multi story car park. From there a bus as well as an inclined elevator will take you to the upper reservoir. You leave the bus at the top of the Moosersperre from where an impressive view opens out onto a landscape shaped by man and nature. Above the dam you can see the mountain tops with the glaciers that feed the reservoir. Looking down the impressive concrete structure you can see the lower reservoir and its dam.
There is also a restaurant and a small museum where you can learn about the technology of the power plant and the history of the project that was first started by the Nazis in 1938.
Outside the Museum there is a little beer garden with a beautiful view of the landscape.
