The biggest thing Ive learned is LOOK AFTER YOUR PASSPORT! Earlier this year I wasn't allowed on my flight out of New Olreans because my passport was damaged for rain and general wear and tear. I had to fly to Huston instead, where the closest Australian embassy is. I was stuck in Huston for nearly a week while I waited for my new passport. The whole ordeal cost me over $1000 for a new passport, flights and food and accomidation in Huston.
