INTRO:
We’ve got a pretty good system at this point in the game. For a few years now we have been maximizing our summer vacation by picking a desirable destination in the USA to go ride and then saving ourselves some heartache by just trucking the bikes, X2 WR250Rs, down to a central spot so we can hit the ground running with high quality roads from the get-go. It’s like high grading on fun! Our setup is nothing fancy. We have an old 90s Chevy Pickup truck and the 2 WRs fit in there fine. It’s usually a couple of solid days of driving but Interstates make progress easy in America.
Utah is rad!
We made arrangements to start our exploration of Utah from Two Step Hideaway. Scott and Julie are the nicest people and have a really cool set-up out at their remote homestead. If you have a chance it’s a fun place to stop and check out. Scott is also a happy member of the WR250R tribe. We were able to leave our truck on their property and point our bikes in the direction of the Utah Backcountry Discovery Route (UTBDR) Section 2 Lockhart Basin route. I asked Garmin to take us the “fastest route possible” and apparently Garmin has an adventurous streak. We hit the dirt less than 10km down the road, passing the Lisbon Valley Mine. Our route turned into a tricky little ride with washouts, sand and steep rocky descents before reaching the paved 191 and 211 that leads to the Canyonlands National Park and would get us on the Lockhart Basin track. Boy, I was hoping to ease back into the riding groove but Utah just served it up rugged and wild right away, a sign of the adventures to come?
We found an amazing spot to camp for the night, called Hamburger Rock campground, and took the opportunity to explore some of the trails leading off the back of the campground. There was sand, amazing rock formations, dried up river beds. So far Utah was delivering on all its promises. To top off the first day we watched the sunset and stars from on top of the hamburger shaped rock.
