Mary Rose Memorial

The Mary Rose, the battleship best associated with Henry VIII, was a formidable opponent for much of her career. She was constructed as a member of the king's navy when he first ascended to the throne in 1509 and launched two years later. She would go on to win two wars against France and one war against the Scots.

Then the worst happened.
Her 500-person crew experienced the end of the world on July 19, 1545, when she sank to the bottom due to a freak accident while taking part in the Battle of the Solent.
Only a few people managed to survive.
The remainder were dragged under with her and wouldn't surface again until 1982, when she was salvaged as part of the largest maritime archaeological dig ever.

In Portsmouth's Historic Dockyard, you can visit the Mary Rose Museum to see her haunting remains today.
You may roam through the ship's eerie hull and decks and learn the incredible stories of the people who served and lived aboard her in addition to the 10,000+ artefacts that have been recovered from the deep.
