The best places I have been in Rome (part 6): Pantheon

in #travel7 years ago

Hi everyone,

we leave Piazza Navona behind us and target one of the most important buildings of human history: the Pantheon.

Still today, the Pantheon is the building with the biggest columns made of a single piece of stone on earth ever used by humans!
Ans still today it is the biggest building made without steel having the biggest couple with hole as roof - there is no other building on earth that has a roof like that.
And it is probably one of the oldest buildings still existing and in use today (today the Pantheon is used as a church, but in ancient Rome it was the temple for all gods and has been build 27 bc!!! That makes it 2044 years old!!!

I will not write about the history, the building or anything you might read in your tour guide book or on wikipedia.
I just want to tell you, that this is a must see when you will be in Rome the next time.

In the above picture you can see the open cut of the Pantheon - interesting are following facts in my opinion:

  1. the inside of the building is round and there might fit in perfectly a ball with a diameter of 40+ meters
  2. the walls at the floor level are 6 meters this but the very top of the building is only approximately 40 cm strong
  3. the columns at the entrance are the biggest in the world (made of one piece of stone
  4. when it rains, the water enters the building through the hole at the top of it
  5. when the building is full of people the body heat will exit through the hole at the top of the building - this might in some case keep the rainwater outside (like an invisible shield :) )
  6. the letters above the columns are extremely bis, although you would not think so they are something about 1,5 meters high!
  7. behind the Pantheon there is a small bar where they officially make the best coffee in the world (no kidding - they won prices for the last 30 years!) Ask for Caffé St. Eustacchio on St. Eustaccio place (150 meters away from the pantheon (behind it, right street).

Here is a website with a great reconstruction of the ancient Rome version of the pantheon: http://www.romanoimpero.com/2009/09/il-pantheon.html

And now, here are some pictures I took from the Pantheon:
