Exploring Hermanus... aka "a village" 100km from Cape Town

in #travel7 years ago

Hermanus is a small town on the southern coast in the Western Cape, South Africa. It lies along Walker Bay and is about 100 kilometers southeast of Cape Town.

It is well-known for its whale watching and each September hosts the annual whale watching festival to celebrate the return of the Southern Right Whales to the Walker Bay area for calving and mating.

I was there last April and unfortunately missed the whales. South Africa also starts to cool down towards the end of April as we head into our winter so it was a little cold (by South African standards). Nevertheless, it was a relaxing break in a beautiful, quiet place which people still refer to as "the village".

This restaurant with stunning views is built into a cave. They serve a killer muscle hot pot. Yum!

Fishing at the Old Harbour. The local kids joined in and were elated when we gave them our hooks and fishing supplies. We catch and release. Since then I no longer fish and I'm a vegetarian. Even though we would release it must still be pretty traumatic for them.

That's all for now. Thanks for reading,

You've made it look so beautiful. I love it when people show me ways to appreciate home.

Thank you 😊

Let's show her some #teamsouthafrica love 🌹🌹

Greetings @lynb, we have a good friend in Hermanus and often spend time there! Our charity has also donated a computer lab to a special needs school in Hermanus and one of our projects, "Trauma training for child handlers" are offered regularly at the school! Whenever we go down (from Johannesburg), we stay at a friends apple farm near Elgin/Grabouw! Certainly a lovely place! Great post and Upvoted! Blessings! Stephen

Thank you, Stephen!
What wonderful things you have done for the children there!

It is indeed a beautiful area. I am also from Jo'burg and love going there for a break.
Followed and take care,
Lyn

Well it seems we are in the same boat! In the process of selling the Papillon buildings in Johannesburg and our house and preparing to move down there later in the year! I say later, as we have to train the new owners how to manage and administer the skills training projects! Thankfully they are also keeping our staff, as they are well versed in the running of the projects. I have always seen change as an adventure and we are already lining up charity and educational partnerships in Paarl (we partnered with the MasterChef shoots down there) and Villiersdorp. Fortunately we are also welcome at the Camphill school in Hermanus. Phew! Feels like I am laying out my whole life here! Blessings!

It sounds like you have an exciting year ahead :-) wishing you all the very best on your move and your new adventures ahead. I also love an adventure and it's great that you see everything as an adventure! I look forward to your blog posts on your new beginnings. Lyn

Great photos and post. I love Hermanus and the Overberg.

A beautiful part of our country, used to love fishing in the harbour as a child in East London.

The dassie sunbathing, always feels like they are chilled out with nothing better to do @lynb

Thanks for sharing your outing, lovely sights to see.

Thanks @joanstewart😊Appreciate your stopping by. I wish I could be a dassie.

Thanks for taking us to the coast with you . It’s so pretty there. Does it get really cold in the winter or is it mild? Your friend.❤️🐓🐓

Thank you for stopping by😘
It can go into the minuses at night but the days are warmer. Usually 12 - 22 degrees during the day. Some parts are colder than others and even have snow. All in all, I've never been as cold here as I have been in Europe. 😘

Stunning post! I have actually never been to Hermanus side - Added to Bucket List!!

I'm glad it makes you want to go there 😊😊 thanks @breezin!

Hey the pleasure is all mine! Thank you for sharing!!

Really beautiful place and great photos, one day I’d like to travel to Africa.

Thanks- you have to. But you might never leave! It's called the Africa bug and if you're bitten you're in real danger of it becoming your new home. I feel very blessed to have been born here.

Never seen a post about this part of South Africa. Very inspiring images; makes me want to run there!

Thank you. It really is a special place!

Beautiful photos of one of my favourite places in South Africa. How does anyone choose a favourite? Thanks for sharing and encouraging people to visit our beautiful country 😊😊

Thanks @kiligirl! Definitely hard to choose but it's one of my favourites too.

For me it might be partly because of friends living there or nearby....

That's always convenient.

Stunning post! You are a genius. Keep it up!
