Bencana yang merenggut ratusan ribu korban rakyat Aceh ini dianggap salah satu bencana paling besar serta terdahsyat dalam abad ini.

Kedhasyatan gelombang tsunami yang menerpa pesisir utara Banda Aceh pada Bulan Desember 2004 yang lalu nyatanya tetap meninggalkan jejak. Tak hanya tetap terbayang dalam semua ingatan masyarakat, tsunami juga meninggalkan jejak berupa monumen. Monumen yang satu ini sangat menjadi peringatan bagi siapapun kepada dahsyatnya kekuatan alam.

Salah satunya adalah Monumen PLTD (Pembangkit Listips Tenaga Diesel) Apung di Desa Punge, Blancut, Banda Aceh. Sesuai sangat dengan namanya, kapal PLTD apung ini adalah sebuah sumber yang bertenaga listrik bagi wilayah Ulee Lheue – tempat kapal ini ditambatkan sebelum terjadinya tsunami.

Kapal dengan panjang 63 meter ini sanggup menghasilkan daya sebesar 10,5 megawatt. Dengan bagian luas mencapai 1.900 meter persegi serta bobot 2.600 ton, tak ada yang bisa membayangkan bahwa kapal ini bisa bergerak dan jatuh sampai ke tengah Kota Banda Aceh.

Ketika tsunami terjadi pada tanggal 26 Desember 2004, kapal ini terseret gelombang pasang dengan tinggi 9 meter jadi bergeser ke jantung Kota Banda Aceh sejauh 5 kilometer. Kapal ini terhempas sampai ke tengah-tengah pemukiman warga, tak jauh dari Museum Tsunami.

Dari 11 orang awak serta berbagai warga yang berada di atas kapal ketika tsunami terjadi, hanya satu orang yang sukses selamat. Fenomena pergeseran kapal PLTD apung ini menunjukkan sebuahkedahsyatan dan kekuatan gelombang yang menimpa Serambi Makkah kala itu.

Saat ini, area kurang lebih PLTD Apung sudah dibeli oleh pemerintah untuk ditata ulang menjadi wahana wisata edukasi. Untuk mengenang korban jiwa yang jatuh dampak tsunami, dibuat monumen peringatan. Pada monumen saat itu, sudah tertera tanggal serta waktu kejadian dari musibah yang juga menimpa berbagai negara tidak hanya Indonesia.

Di sekeliling monumen, dibuat dinding dengan relief menyerupai gelombang air bah. Dari atas kapal ini, pengunjung juga bisa menonton rangkaian pegunungan Bukit Barisan.
