Journey across Mother Russia - Travel Blog - #3 Husky Sledding!

in #travel7 years ago

If you love huskies, you have come to the right place!

In my previous post about Russia (you can read it here - https://steemit.com/travel/@kamalamacan/journey-across-mother-russia-travel-blog-2-evil-fort) I mentioned that I had one more day in Ekaterinburg. It was a great idea because I got a chance to go to see huskies. Usually all times are booked a few months in advance as it is a new attraction even for locals. However, they had one free spot on Monday afternoon which was exactly when I was trying to find what to do for the day. So, the day which was supposed to be disappointing, turned into a nice adventure!
There are 45 dogs in the nursery and the girl there knew everything about each of them. She told us a little story about of each dog. After, everyone could go into their cages to play with animals. I must to say they are the most friendly and lovely dogs I have ever seen! And they are all so different.
For example, this dog always tries to look right into your eyes, it maintains eye contact with everyone.

This one is extremely friendly and her favourite thing is to try to lick your face.

She has amazing eyes! One of her eyes is blue and the other one – half blue and half brown.

Here is her brother – they both love to jump around and play like little kids.

This dog looks nice and quiet but he will try to get and eat everything that he can reach – scaves, gloves, bags…But you can’t resist to pet him!

After spending some time with the dogs, everyone went out for sledding. I had a chance to see how it works before I sat in a sled myself. I understand now why huskies are perfect for travelling through the snow.

They are very strong and work as a good team. Because each dog has its own personality and physical ability it is important to put the right dog in right place in their harness. For example, the first two dogs are the leaders because they have to choose the way. Last two are the strongest because they are first who will pull a sled.

The huskies run 200 meters circles and for a few minutes I imagined myself being far away in Siberia where those dogs are the only form of travel.

On the way back I got a lift with local students because the place was in the middle of nowhere (well, only 40 mins away from the city) so there was no chance to get a taxi or public transport. I went straight to airport and got my baggage back. Later this evening I took a train journey to the next city which took 11 hours. I will tell more about the trip on the Russian railway in my next post.
