Let me tour you to the next place where you can devote your travel desire in Municipality of Calatrava.

Calatrava is 130 kilometers away from the capital city of Negros Occidental the Bacolod City. A first class municipality consist of 40 barangays. Where the people can speak and understand Cebuano/Tagalog/English.

Traveling time will take 3-4 hours via North coastal access road air-conditioned/non-air-conditioned.

Calatrava was named after the city of La Mancha in Central Spain. An ancient fortress in the middle ages, it was also given the Military Orders of Spain, famous for its so-called Cruz de Calatrava and considered as one of the highest decorations given by the King of Spain.

The Monkey Sanctuary

Calatrava is one of the place here in Negros where you can find the sanctuary of the hundred monkeys. Scattered in 40 connected barangays. These monkeys are living in the wild where you can find numerous caves. The monkeys transfer from one place to another many years ago and exposed their selves to people when they experience lack of food supply.

Until one day that food shortage the reason why monkey evidently showing to people becomes an attraction to the place. Specifically in Sitio Paitan, Baranggay Paghumayan Municipality of Calatrava turns into an upland of friendly monkeys. Friendly in the sense of feeding them and of course following the rules to avoid provoking these monkeys to become unfriendly.

These place is considered as the Monkey Sanctuary of Calatrava. It means there are certain group and organizations who are responsible keeping this place secure, safe, and preserved not only for monkeys but also to eliminate unwanted intentions by other people for personal interest. Local government of Calatrava is always making sure that this Monkey Sanctuary will be free from abuse and destroying the habitat of this friendly creatures.

Tourist, commuters, visitors, backpackers, travelers or what alias describes you when you visit the Monkey Sanctuary.
Everyone are not exempted to follow the guidelines and rules to avoid unnecessary scenarios.

Bring food like banana's, bread, or water to feed them

removed anything from your body that could possibly take by monkeys from you ( like dangling earing, necklace, un-secure cameras, cellphone in your pocket, bracelets and etc. )

DONT's

don't feed them except from required food

Don't expose you valuable things like gadgets ( Monkeys would love to take it away from you as soon as they get a chance )

Don't tease the monkeys to avoid provoking them ( They get easily irritated if you initiated unwanted actions )

Don't pull the tail, ears or any body part of the monkey.

Rumors about these monkeys

There are rumors that was spread not only in Calatrava and including some nearby cities/municipalities. That these monkey was brought by a Chinese community and lets these animal live freely in the wild of Calatrava. But according to the historical and research team of the said municipality. These monkey are living already many years ago and consider the place as their home. It just so happen that these monkeys experienced inadequacy to their source of food. Then started to search to feed their selves/clan. That's why these monkey are evidently showing to people, because they used to that kind of habit when people start giving food to feed them.

Calatrava is so blessed to have these troops of friendly monkeys. You can see like of them to some places but not the same with the characteristic of Calatrava friendly monkeys.

Monkeys are animals but we should treat them with love and care like humans. While some humans are acting like an animals which they supposed not to do that. So it means human and animals are equally similar that needs support from its kind.
