According to the 2018 Global Peace Index report (GPI), the global level of peace has deteriorated by 0.27%.

Since last year 92 countries deteriorated and only 71 improved, both Europe and North America becoming less peaceful overall.

While highly developed nations, in general are the safest places you can visit, countries that have a high percentage of the population living in poverty, also have a highly volatile political situation which could easily erupt into civil war.

For the fifth consecutive year since the civil war started back in 2013 Syria remains the most dangerous nation on the planet and is closely followed by other war devastated nations like Afghanistan, South Sudan, Iraq and many others.

At the opposite end of the spectrum Iceland has maintained its position, since 2008, as the most peaceful country. New Zealand, Austria and Portugal are also not far away.
