Have You Visited the Standing Stones of Stenness on the Orkney Islands of Scotland? Naturelive Photography Entry

If you have ever dreamed of going to Stonehenge someday, forget it. You can't get near the stones since they have put up a fence 100 meters away. You can merely gaze at them from afar. If it's your dream to see standing stones and see them up close, then get thee to the Orkney Islands of Scotland instead, where your standing stone experience will not only be unobstructed by fences, but you are free to go at any time of the day or night and given free, unobstructed access to the stones to your heart's content.

In the thousands of years they have been standing, they have not even been vandalized! Incredible. These pictures are both of the 'lesser' ring known as the Standing Stones of Stenness, the ring associated with death, as opposed to the larger Ring of Brodgar associated with life. They can both be visited along a walking path that is an archaeologist's dream, with two standing stone rings, 2 neolithic villages, and an almost perfectly preserved large cairn that can all be visited in the same afternoon with less than a 2 mile walk.

Because Stenness is so much smaller than the Ring of Brodgar, it's much more photogenic even though it's far more underwhelming to the visitor. If you are ever in Scotland, I highly recommended going the extra mile to take the ferry to the Orkney islands and see the massive amount of ancient megaliths that are all easily visited, often with many of them being able to be visited even in the same day.
