Planning A Trip To Iceland

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

Yup, I am planning to go on a trip to Iceland this summer. Today I bought flight tickets from Estonia to Keflavik airport. It is planned to go with my girlfriend and be there for 10 days. Dates are scheduled to be from 29th June to 8th July.

One of the biggest problems with this country is that it is one of the most expensive locations in Europe and traveling there requires quite a big budget. I have taken into account that all this trip will cost me around 3000 euros( 3600USD ) per person. When this idea came to my mind, I asked some of my friends if they are willing to join me as well, in this case, it would have been a little cheaper to split some of the expenses. Unfortunately, all they said to me was that they are never able to collect that money within 10 months. Okay no problem their loss hah, fortunately, my dear girlfriend agreed to live in poverty for some time and start collecting.

Iceland is the must-visit location to me. Long time I have dreamed of going there and this time has come now, no more waiting and thinking, hmmm maybe in the future someday, that's bullshit. If you always postpone plans, it is probable that at one point it is already too late and you can never accomplish some things.

Plans so far

Like I said before I'm going for 10 days. This is not gonna be some chilling vacation, it's probably gonna be exhausting and hard sometimes. I'm not only gonna visit only main tourist attractions and call it a trip, the plan is to do as much as I have time, visit many many places, hike trails, hike a glacier and different volcanoes go on the ocean and see whales. Overall it is planned to rent a campervan, drive all the golden circle around the island and do as much as I possibly can. Hope to make it to places where "ordinary" tourist usually doesn't go and explore the "unexplored". The big advantage is to rent a camper van, in my opinion, this gives you the freedom to go anywhere and sleep almost everywhere. The problem: its expensive as fuck, 240EUR per day, with full insurances, inverter, and WIFI. It is always safer to get full insurances and have your own risk low as possible.
A more precise daily plan/schedule is not yet in place. Of course, it is impossible to do everything according to previously planned. Many things changes on the spot.

Expected expenses

These are the expected expenses to me.
1400EUR, my part of the camper van.
420EUR, flight tickets
About 250EUR for the food. I'm trying to avoid restaurants and cook myself.
About 100EUR for gas.
150EUR, glacier day hike with specialized instructor and equipment included, fairly cheap.
100Eur, whale watching trip.
65Eur, blue lagoon( blue thermal heated spa outside ). Gotta relax too.
670Eur, had to make a deposit to a credit card for car rental.
All this already equals 3155EUR and probably it's not all. Many little expenses will add more.
My girlfriend has to pay less than this, I agreed to pay more to make it a little easier for her.

Oh, by the way, it is gonna be a polar day on Iceland at this time so it's not gonna get dark. I can witness a midnight sun, will be weirdly interesting. Heck, I can't wait any longer, 3 months to go!

If you have been on Iceland and have any recommendations then feel free to share them in the comments.

Hah pretty interesting :D

How exciting. 240 EUR a day is crazy for a camper. You will love it I am sure however.

Yeah, those prices are massive, but yea I'm not gonna regret it, I think :D

I've always wanted to go to Iceland! The one place I want to see, and maybe you do as well, is the continental divide between the American and European plates. You can swim between the two plates!

Oh for sure I'm going between the plates, I'm not so sure about the diving tho but it would be extremely cool!
