St. Augustine, The Old City that never gets old.
. This is a view from atop the Castillo.
Every year during the holidays we head off to St. Augustine to look at the beautiful lights. It's a fairly new tradition, being that this was our third year doing it. My girlfriend and I both love the historical city and love Christmas lights. It has become something we look forward to all year. We venture off to St. Augustine as often as we can and everytime we go, there is something new (that is actually very old) to see and learn about. This year not only did we walk through the gorgeous city, we took a horse and carriage ride through the lights. Rarely do things feel more magical than being cuddled up together on a cold night riding through one of the oldest cities in the state in a horse and carriage. Riding past the Castillo, I couldn't help but wonder how many people throughout history have taken their horses or legs, or original Ford's, past that monument of history. If only those walls could talk, I would sit there for days just to listen.
This year was slightly different. We did a new thing, we coincidentally planned our trip the same days as a couple friend (friends that are a couple) planned theirs. Once we discovered this, we decided to turn it in to a double date, double couple getaway. I'm really not sure what to call it. But it worked! We ended up seeing and exploring things that we havent noticed before because we had fresh eyes with us. You know? It was nice.
Here is photo taken during our tour of the Oldest House. I personally learned alot. For example this house was originally only two rooms, and a family of 8 lived in it. It had a firepit in the center to keep it warm in the winter and to keep the mosquitos at bay in the summer. If you have ever been in Florida during the summer you know first hand those monsters will carry you away. As we walked through the city afterwards we notice the architecture with new eyes and we were able to guess when it it was probably built, and trying to imagine what life had been like throughout the centuries on those same streets you know... For an Old City, it never gets old.
This is my girlfriend with her God-son. He loved running through the lights. I didn't get a whole lot of pictures of the lights this year because we had him with us, and he kept our hands full, there wasn't much room for the camera.
If you ever go during the holidays, take the time to look at the details of the decorations. They really spend a lot of time on putting them up and it really is gorgeous.
I leave you with just a random picture of the little guy pointing to the statue that stands outside the Oldest house. Im not exactly sure why he liked that statue so much. Perhaps because there a was a young boy in it, as if he related to it on some toddler level.
Steem on everyone, and always take time to see the magic around you. 😸
