A friend of mine visiting Cambodia in 2008. At the airport, he hired a guy with a scooter and they travelled the country like that for 3 days. The one thing he remembers vividly was a sign that said:
Yes, you are absolutely right. The beauty of this nation and architecture marvel has been destroyed by continuos war in the region, specially during the Vietnam war, the country went through a hell of a time. Remember the bombing campaign by then US president Nixon. Years after the war, still they are clearing the landmines seeded every part of the forest and landscape of the beautiful country.
Very interesting history of Anchor town, will post some photos at later time.
