A Walk Amongst the Redwoods - Ancient Forests of Northern California

Just outside of the San Francisco Bay Area, on the road south towards Santa Cruz, you will find one of the oldest forests on Earth. Walking amongst the ancient trees it is easy to become lost in wandering thoughts, imagining life in days long past.

It is a short drive from the park entrance to the trailhead. The road is in good condition, but the parking area is a bit small so some cars are parked on the street. Despite seeing a number of parked cars, the trail itself was not crowded. The trail is well maintained, relatively flat and easy to traverse. The air is fresh and calm, and it is easy to forget the bustling cities just a short drive up the road. Carried on the air is the calming sounds of distant bird songs, and the creaking of the trees as they sway back and forth with the wind.

I am told the trees have weathered many catastrophic storms by working together, letting their roots intertwine, and supporting each other during floods or strong winds. Judging by the fire damage exposed on some of the trees, it is easy to imagine the difficult times this place has had to endure. Walking amongst the charred remains of a giant tree, it is easy to imagine the apocalyptic inferno that must have swept through here. Seeing some trees burnt black, while others still stand strong is a tribute to the relative resilience of the forest.

Some of these trees look as though they suffered traumatic damage, and yet, they still found a way to grow and thrive despite their setbacks. Seeing this strength and adaptability in nature brings me a sense of peace, and a belief that no matter what nature has thrown at it, life will find a way to endure. This is a pleasant thought when compared to all of the fearmongering I am often confronted with regarding the state of natural places around the world.

As I look up the trunks of these magnificent trees, I imagine the many generations of people who have looked up from this same spot. In my mind, I wonder what it might be like to climb up as Bilbo Baggins had in Mirkwood forest. How spectacular it must be to reach the canopy and gaze across the top of the forest. I wonder how far I could see from up there. Could I see the city to the north, the sea to the west, or perhaps just the trees for as far as my eyes would allow me?

As we were leaving the trail, I came across this cool blue bird. I do not know what species it is, I thought maybe it was a Bluejay.

I can see there are over 80 miles of trails to explore in this forest, stretching from the sea to marshlands located deeper inland. Unfortunately, I only have one day to explore this place, and must return again to enjoy the other trails. On our way out of the park I notice a few campgrounds scattered around the park. When I return, I think I will book a campsite so I can stay for a few days and explore the rest of the area without worrying about time.

Overall, I found this to be a very beautiful and relaxing place to enjoy nature. If you decide to visit, I suggest bringing sturdy footwear, bug spray, and lots of snacks, as there are not many options for buying food once you enter the park.
