Boattripping and islandhopping on a weekday in Norway

In our sparetime we Norwegians mostly go for walks around something (like a lake), or over something (like a little mountain). But those of us that live by the sea also go on boatrides. Let me take you through what that involves, and what equipment you need to have a norwegian boatride.

First you need a boat. In Norway it rains a lot, and when you get to the boat you usually have to "aus" it for water as its called in Norwegian. Here you can see my friend Knut doing the traditional "ausing" of the water.

You can also bring a child with you to stand on the dock looking at you while you are "ausing". It needs to have a life jacket in case it falls in the water.

The essentials

From the top: Gastank, bucket (for fish or crabs), oars (if you forget your gastank), life jacket from the early 90´s (not later than that). And lastly you need a motor in the back. Norwegians prefer the Mercury or Mariner brand. This one has 25 crazy horsepowers.

Set sail to the open sea!

Find a small island with a small beach. Here the custom is to eat some light snacks and drink coffee while the children looks for small crabs by the water (they can use the bucket mentioned earlier)

Time to feast

Here we see the coffee and the "Saltstenger", a popular snack in Norway. Its like a veeeery thin pretzel.

Going home

When the child has emptied the beach for little crabs, and the adults do not have any coffee left, it is time to go home. Here we can see the child and his father content with their day out to sea.
