Walk.with.me #18: Hong Kong (Part 4) - Snacking Our Way Through a Traditional Tea House!!
After a dim sum lunch, we were inclined to let our tummies rest.
After a short walk through a shopping mall that gave us a lovely view of the sparkly bay...
We found ourselves strolling by a Cha Chaan Teng (tea restaurant).
Cha Chaan Tengs belong high on the Must-Go-To List for any Hong Kong trip. They are known for their affordable menus marrying both the Hong Kong and Hong Kong-style Western cuisines.
The four of us looked at one another and nodded in agreement. There was space in our bellies for Something Sweet!!!
We strolled into the restaurant and promptly found a table at the back (we were lucky because it was not peak period, the queues can get quite crazy during peak times).
We ordered 3 Iced Milk Teas, 1 Yin-Yang (half milk tea, half coffee), 2 Egg Tarts, 2 Bo Luo Baos (Pineapple buns, named for their famous sweet and buttery criss-cross topping which resembles a pineapple. There's no pineapple in the buns!!), and 2 Thick Peanut Butter Toasts with Butter and Sweetened Condensed Milk.
The cold drinks arrived almost immediately. The server aunties sure are nimble!
A big sip confirmed my surroundings...Authentic Hong Kong Milk Tea flowed over my tongue — thick, milky, sweet and strong! Mmmm!!
Then the egg tarts and Bo Lo Baos arrived!
Each couple shared a pineapple bun each. My teeth sank through the crunchy trademark sugary topping and into a soft, buttery bun that was still warm. Satisfying, but not mind-blowing.
My favourite item of the day was the Egg Tart. I ate one whole tart, of course! =D A silky-smooth, light filling sat inside a delicate buttery crust. Wow! I immediately craved another one.
BUT!!!
The Thick Peanut Butter Toasts arrived first.
One is meant to stab holes into the french toast with a fork so that the melting butter block or the sweetened condensed milk being poured over thoroughly infuses the bread.
The more civilized ones make square incisions using their knives. Not me! hurhur
The toast was much too heavy and cloying for my taste. In Singlish (Singaporean English), I'd call the toast too jelak (an adjective used to refer to a food that is too rich, to the point that one feels repulsed by it).
I ordered a second Iced Milk Tea and another Egg Tart to wash down the jelak feeling.
The total cost of our tea time came up to HKD 200 (€21.50). Split in half, each couple paid HKD 100 (€10.25). Even if this wasn't one of the most famous Cha Chaan Teng's in HK, the quality was decent and well worth the price!!
Hi my dear! The food there looks tasty! And the drinks also very yummy, I like the custard tart , it's my favorite cake.
i fell hungry
showing nice food i really fell hungry
gosh that looks so good! were the egg tarts sweet? Like custardy?
Beautiful and the drinks look refreshing!
Strangely, just back from HK for a couple of weeks and never had an egg tart there.
