Paranormal Phenomena and Science - Astral Journey
The Scientific explanation?
The extracorporeal journey is described as a person's ability to get out of his body
This phenomenon has been described many times and in similar way by many people.
The situations in which a person is this sensation are:
- The consequences of head trauma
- Sensory deprivation (being isolated in the dark without any noise)
- The imminent death experience (the famous luminous tunnel of people in intensive care units)
- Use of psychedelic drugs (LSD)
- Dehydration
- Electric stimulation of a part of the brain
The majority of scientists consider this phenomenon as a form of hallucination that can be caused by various psychic or neurological factors. The advocates of parapsychology and the occult sciences see the expression of the existence of the soul or the spirit that detach itself from the body and move in distant places.
It is estimated that one in 10 people has experienced this experience at least once in their lifetime.
An extracorporeal travel experience can be experienced in the following situations...
Spontaneously
During sleep or in a period close to sleep:
Some people who have experienced this experience tell people who are just before the "journey" begins in a kind of lucid or awakened dream occurring when they are about to fall asleep or at the beginning of sleep.
Near-death experience:
Others explain that the trip took place during resuscitation, and then others in imminent death following a trauma or serious illness.
Extreme Physical Effort:
During extreme physical exertion, for example in alpinists in very high altitude or marathon runners, some of them felt a sensation extracorporeal localization.
Mental provocation
There are many testimonies from people who have tried to develop the techniques to provoke these sensations of extracorporeal trips:
Mental Induction Techniques:
Some people have tried to let the body "fall asleep" by keeping the mind awake. To do this they have developed methods by preventing sinking into sleep (holding an object to the main one that will fall when the person falls asleep) while relaxing the body to the maximum. By this means, you will be able to feel the feeling of leaving their bodies.
They also seek to achieve the result by leading a dream in semi-sleep situations.
With meditation or the state of trance, individuals in the civil state, conform to the expedient and leave their bodies and then "actually" live that journey.
Mechanical provocation
This involves causing electric waves of a certain frequency in the brain (recorded by electroencephalogram). Different techniques have been used for this purpose: electrical stimulation of the brain; Hyperstimulation by music; Sensory deprivation, etc. By these means one manages to induce in the subject a feeling of being beside his body, literally to leave his body.
Chemical provocation
A number of chemicals can cause the sensation to be out of his body. These include hallucinogenic drugs such as ketamine and dextromethorphan; So-called psychadelic products such as dimethyltriptamine from ayahuasca (a liana-based drink used by Amazon shamans) or Salvia divinorum (sage of divinorum) used in Mexico.
Amphetamines have the same effect, but this is the result of sleep deprivation due to the product.
Extrasensorial Journey:
Most people who have experienced these experiences relate them in the following order:
- Beginning: detachment of attention from the realities surrounding the subject. Same as entering sleep
- Cataleptic stage: total paralysis of the body. Sensations or visions despite closed eyes may occur.
- Stage of separation: the subject sees things from an angle other than that in which his body is. But he feels like a resistance that brings him back to the body.
- Stage of movement: movements become completely free and the person feels able to control them.
- Re-entry stage: need to return to his body.
Near-death experience :
This phenomenon includes, in addition to extracorporeal travel, other factors. The person describes the vision of deceased persons, religious figures and a sense of transcendence of one's self. He has the feeling of being dead. He sometimes hears sounds and the vision of a luminous tunnel in which he engages and where he meets luminous characters even God himself. Then he feels back to life.
Theories of extracorporeal travel experience:
The explanation used by psychologists and specialists in the mental sciences is that it is a hallucinatory phenomenon due to various psychological factors. It is not the opinion of parapsychologists who believe that these are real journeys out of the body of mind or soul.
Scientific studies of extracorporeal travel experiences:
The first in-depth studies on this subject date back to 1968. They consisted for several decades of gathering the statements of people who had experienced these experiences. This made it possible to formulate the chronological description of the experience as reported above and this for the great majority of the persons consulted.
Neurological Experiences:
Neurologists have succeeded in provoking extracorporeal travel experiments by electrically stimulating a specific brain location, the right temporo-parietal junction (Olaf Blank, published in Science in August 2007). This place of the brain is known to integrate the visual and spatial functions, that is to say to locate us in space.
Michael Persinger conducted the same experiments with the same results but using magnetic stimulation.
Ehrsson also published an experiment in Science in 2007, in which he induced an extracorporeal journey experience in a subject. He used to do 2 cameras filming both the back of the person. Each camera projected images in real time on two small screens located in front of each eye. He saw a 3D image of his back as a person would have seen behind him. He then manipulated the virtual image. The guinea pig indicated that he had the feeling of being behind his own back and seeing himself from behind.
Psychologists suggest that a person experiences this type of experience when they lose physical sensations (auditory, tactile, etc.) while the mind remains vigilant and conscious. Thus the perceptions concerning the environment appear to him as coming from his only mind and no longer from the body from which the feeling of being detached from the body.
Numerous other experiments, using various processes, achieved the same results.
In conclusion, experiences of extracorporeal travel are reported by many people in very different situations but according to a common pattern. There are now strong arguments to explain these phenomena by abnormal responses of the brain to all kinds of stimulations even if the exact mechanism remains unclear.
