Bringing Fresh Produce To The People
A way of life that is swiftly dying out, but still is seen throughout Thailand. The floating markets of Thailand are a must see for tourists, but many of the people who live along the rivers and canals also count on the arrival of the boats laden with extraordinary produce.
Imagen the morning excitement when the boats first come into view. Freshly picked produce is brought daily for the the villages along the river. Here you see the best bok choy, the finest greens, the freshest carrots and onions. You never know what you will find and each boat has it's own wares.
Another Canoe laden With Goods
A second canoe has just arrived laden down with what appears to be rice. What a marvelous advantage to be able to buy right off the canoe. This has always been a way of life in Thailand, but due to easier access to transportation, more people are able to find their way to the city markets. Consequently, this is a way of life that is slowly dying.
Today, there are many of these markets that flourish in the tourist areas, as this is what tourists want to see. It is an experience that they can not see in many other places. But more exciting than these, is to find a market that is filled with the needs of the villagers in mind. There are still many markets that are ran for the local Thai villagers. These villagers come to shop out of their necessity, who without these river canoes, would have a long walk to market.
While in Thailand, spend some time to seek out the local floating markets. They will be laden with everything you need to keep a home. Here, instead of tourist trinkets, you will find baskets and housewares, rice and produce. These are the markets that excite the people when they see them near the village.
