Finding Lighthouse
Spoiler Alert: We didn't find the lighthouse!
This is a a bit of a funny story I want to share for you guys. Me and my sister were driving, or rather I drove because she doesn't have a license, towards Pori and the western coast of Finland without having a clear idea of where we would go. The thing with road trips is to embrace the unknown, not care about the time, and even with having a destination, you don't want to take the most obvious route to it.
As we were getting near Pori, only about ten kilometres away, we saw a sign pointing to a lighthouse and decided to check it out. We were a little sceptical because aren't lighthouses supposed to be in the coast, and not 10 kilometres away from it. We think much more of it, because this isn't our hoods so we wouldn't know any better.
The first sign we saw led us to a quaint little village, roads that only fit one car at a time, old wooden houses on both sides, with nicely kept gardens. We were really enjoying the views but we were on a mission to find the lighthouse. We drove around for a while before we saw the next sign pointing us the way to the lighthouse. The weird thing was that the signs didn't say the name of the lighthouse, or how long of a road was it, or how long was it for the next turn. We kept driving and driving, waiting to see the next sign, or the lighthouse itself. I pride myself on having good sense of direction, so I knew I wasn't driving in circles, but we just couldn't find the lighthouse.
At some point we stopped and googled if there really is a lighthouse anywhere near, but the search came back empty and we gave up. As we turned to head away from the village and towards the city of Pori, we saw yet another lighthouse sign! By this point, we had been driving for more than half an hour and it all started to be really funny. We decided to let the search for the lighthouse be and go our merry way to other adventures.
We went about our day, some go which you already saw yesterday, and we had a lot of fun, forgetting all about the empty search earlier. We spend the whole afternoon outside shooting and hanging out, and only headed bvack after 9pm. Here comes the funniest part, after we had driven well pass the same village we had been earlier in, and already turned towards the central Finland, we saw yet another lighthouse sign, a split second decision and we were back at our search! This time the sign was pointing to the opposite direction from the previous ones. Is there two lighthouses, or what the hell is going on in here!?
We were led to yet another small village, trying to find the next sign to point us to the right direction. It always took several kilometres of driving before seeing the next sign and the roads kept getting smaller. I was sure we would end up on someones summer cottage eventually, so we turned backed and I navigated towards the bigger road to get back faster. And there it was again, the fucking lighthouse sign, now pointing to the north. This makes no sense!
We are pretty sure that this is all a joke made to fool tourists, or that the lighthouse is actually in Vaasa, 200 kilometers north along the coast. Oh well, what ever, we had fun even though we didn't find what we were looking for, and that is what road trips are all about!

They are the absolute worst - have you tried doing the classic google earth search then using the km measure line to see how close you were!!??

I don't think so, why would there be signs to a lighthouse on an island, far far away from it.

I know how to google, my point is that none of the signs were anywhere near where the lighthouses would be.

very funny indeed. But all is well that ends well. Although you wanted to see lighthouse but you had fun doing all that. So its sort of balanced.

Hi Eve. A lighthouse is a fairly tall building that is normally white and has a bright light that revolves around the top. If you were in a boat it would have been easier.

I've noticed in my country that there are signs off the interstate highway advertising things that are above a hundred miles from the exit, and sometimes they aren't a large attraction. I guess the interstate has slightly more of an excuse to be misleading than a small town though.
Once before I was led by a detour sign into a maze of different streets, and abandoned with no further signs. I think that was a joke too. Your stories with your sister remind me of mine, except I am the little sister.
