Day1053 - Ayutthaya - Thailand
*One of the famous landmarks in Ayutthaya. The Buddha Head in the Tree Roots - Wat Mahathat. *
There is more to Ayutthaya that just the above. We hired a bicycle (40Baht p.p for the day). Here is a small list of things to see:
Rama Public Park - Entrance 50Baht.
Wat Mahathat - The head was once part of a sandstone Buddha image which fell off the main body onto the ground. It was gradually trapped into the roots of a constantly growing Bodhi Tree. The face reflects the art of the Middle Ayutthaya Period, around 1800s.
Wat Traitrueng - A small Buddhist Ruins.
Phra Ti Nang Yen - A white Buddhist Architecture.
Prasat Sang - A small area with a hammock and a bench for free, overlooking the Lake Bueng Phraram.
Wat Langkhakhao - A small temple away from the crowds.
Wat Langkhadum - Another small ruin.
Wat Sangkhapat - Another deserted small temple in the middle of the park.
Wat Mahathat
Passing on Wat Ratchaburana and Wat Thammikarat as did not feel like paying another 50Baht each for another similar temple, we headed to:
Wat Lokkayasutharam - Free entrance.
The name of the reclining Buddha is Phra Bhuddhasaiyart, which faces east. It was constructed of bricks and cement in the art style of the Middle Ayutthaya Period. It is 37 meters long and that of 8 meters high. The head is placed on a lotus, and the legs overlap squarely to show the equalized toes.
The Reclining Buddha in the Pratoochai District
Tower Pagoda Remains - Free entrance. Not sure what the name is, as there were no signs, and Google just states 'Tower'. It was still an impressive remains!
Remains of an unknown Pagoda
Wat Worrachettharam - Free Entrance. A Buddha housed inside an open room, the place felt abandoned, and an absolute MUST, and very well maintained for a ruin.
A very well preserved Sitting Buddha in an open roof housing
Also driving down South towards the River, we passed by three small Ways, Wat Chao Pram, Wat Ubusot, and Wat Chao Prap, all had free entrances.
The Night Market was also a must visit place, located in Bang Lan. Offering food from deep fried, to bbq-d, steamed and soups. Fruit and delicious cakes, cheap clothes and DVDs!
ONE THING which absolutely broke our hearts, was the Elephant Riding across the streets. We highly suggest against this, breaking an Elephant for human riding as an absolute painful process, and no animal should suffer for the joys of humans.
We strongly suggest AGAINST doing this, and hope to spread the word to stop #animalcruelty...
