Soldier John M. Steele
DSC_0689.jpg

Today we have been in town Sainte-Mère-Eglise, this village is know of his invasion of Normandy, but especially for one person in particular soldier John M Steele. He was an American paratrooper of the 82nd Airborne.

D-Day june 6 1944 the day it had to happen.
But the night before, paratroopers were dropped into waves above the western part of the area. Including John M steele, but unfortunately for him and others the germans were already alarmed, and the chance of succes was very small. They were a simply a target for the Germans.

John M steele was one of the few soldiers who survived, he ended up with his parachute at the church tower. And hung there for 2 hours and pretended to be dead, even when he was shot in his knee to see if he was really dead. Eventually he was taken as a prisoner, but managed to escape himself and rejoin his battalion.
Eventually he died in may 1969 because of troath cancer.

This was my second time that i visite this place
Once in 1999 and now in early 2018.
I can recommended everyone to visit this place.
