"The town that has stayed in the past"

IMG_1939.JPG

Last year I had the pleasure to visit a beautiful place in the northwest of Argentina called Cachi. This is a small town in the province of Salta and it is an amazing place to go and try its delicious empanadas. It is 157 km from the city of Salta, and far away from the noise of the metropolis: really arppreciated. Anxiety decreases and although you are not sure if it is due to temperature or height (2280 meters above sea level), the insertion with the place is immediate.

Part of the "Valles Calchaquíes", known by its houses made from mud. The first thing that catches your attention at the entrance to this Salta town is the lack of high buildings. This is a beautiful town with narrow streets of stones, houses of colonial style and surrounded by snowy peaks that characterize the photos.

The rhythm of the town absorbs everyone who steps on its soil. At 15 it is almost non-existent the amount of people that one can cross when walking through the square. It is the hour in which the craftsmen suspend their journey (they will resume it at 17, well, more or less), and the people of the town mingle with the tourists who are the majority. In Cachi there is no hurry.

And so you live in this place in the world where, because of its tranquility, it would seem that at some point something will happen. And it happens. Like that afternoon when some worried because a crazy guy was setting fire to the street. Actually, it was Francis Mallmann and his traveling cart-kitchen that he has carried around the world (yes, the same one that was in Paris), but that is very local. It was designed especially by three artesanos of Cachi.

It is recommended to go to the cemetery, from which you can have a great panoramic view of the town, by day, or discover the power with which the stars illuminate all the sky, at night. Or follow the road in the most desired transport and meet Cachi Adentro 6 km or Las Pailas, areas where people live with their crops and animals. Where the adobe bricks are drying in the open air.

Church of San José, with important details in cardón wood and declared a Historic Monument by Decree in 1945.
In the center is the San José Church, a Spanish colonial church. Nearby, there is the Archaeological Museum of Cachi Pío Pablo Díaz, which exhibits artifacts found in local excavations, some of them 10,000 years old. In the northwest, there are the Nevado de Cachi mountains, whose summits are covered with snow and can be seen from the city.

Cachi is a great place to visit and to discover new feelings and sensations. I highly recommend that if you go to Salta, you must go to Cachi! You'll love it! I've been there, because of an art "camp" (music, plastic arts, drama, dance, etc) and it was a great experience. (Maybe I'll write a post talking about this event).

Last but not least, when I came back to Buenos Aires, I wrote a few things about this place and I'll like to share it with you. It's in spanish.
