Angkor Ancient Mega City - 01

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

It is said that Angkor city was once the largest city in the entire world. It was the capital city of the Khmer Empire, a powerful Hindu-Buddhist empire in Southeast Asia that flourished from the 9th to the 15th centuries. Within the Angkor ancient city lies the largest religous momunent in the world, the magnificient Angkor Wat. The good few hours spent exploring the Angkor Wat was definitely the highlight of my trip to Angkor city.

As a South East Asian Angkor is a familiar name, but I never knew how it actually looked like until Angelina Jolie's movie, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and baam! Instantly a new listing added to my bucket list: A trip to Cambodia. It was also the very first destination to begin my backpacking life. I spent only 2 days in Siem Reap mainly just to visit the Angkor archaeological site, and i'm definitely regretting for not spending more time exploring the town, which is also the gateway to the Angkor archaeological site.

As a guy who love photography (not pro but more of a hobbyist), I think I worked my index finger to the bone snapping the shutter button every few secs as soon as I arrived the archaeological site LOL. On this blog post I've shared only the few of my personal favourites to keep the blog neat and tidy.

If you are visiting the archaeological site, below are some personal tips:

  • There are 1 day / 3 days / 7 days tickets:
The entire archaeological site is HUGE! It is possible to do a one day trip but it will be a rush, so do plan ahead. Sunrise in Angkor Wat is a must see and as for sunset view, the recommended spot is Phnom Bakheng. 3 days ticket are the most popular as you will get heaps of time to explore the site at your own pace. You could join tours or rent the tuk tuk to visit the site, I would definitely recommend renting the tuk tuk as the driver will follow your pace to explore the site. Try to look for a few travellers to share the cost of tuk tuk if you are alone.

  • Sunrise in Angkor Wat:
Arrive there really early (before 5am) if you wanna get a good spot for the best photos as it gets very crowded. It will be pitch dark when you arrive there so a torch light app on your phone will be very handy.

  • Dress respectfully:
Angkor Wat is not just a tourist place but a sacred site. So do cover your shoulders and avoid wearing miniskirts or shorts.

To end this blog, I've shared my most favourite photos taken in Angkor. Hope you guys like it!
