Travel 101: Walking Tour in Tokyo's Cat Town

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

What tokyo so long?

A short walk west of the Nippori station (日暮里駅) in Tokyo, Japan took me to the old streets of Yanaka (谷中), also known as Cat Town.

Cat Town

Yanaka offers a glimpse in Tokyo's past and a sightseeing opportunity that is very different from the modern, metropolitan city feel of other parts of the city.

From cat-themed cafes and bookstores to cat-printed food and clothes, various stalls and kind of shops can be found in the cat town.

The prices are relatively cheaper compared in other cities so there's no need to worry. You can even buy some snacks and finger food below ¥50! Japa-nice, isn't it?

Of course, after a tiring yet enjoyable walking tour, I bought a cat-shaped taiyaki (たい焼き) with red bean filling as a reward.

Taiyaki is a Japanese cake, usually fish shaped. The most common filling is red bean paste that is made from sweetened azuki beans. Other common fillings may be custard, chocolate, cheese, or sweet potato.

Very cool post.

Seems cool bro, I love pets/animals.

It is, @sharma-s. And you get to play with the cats for free!

Reminds me of the town Nara in japan where the deer approach people and vendors sell food. The video I saw the presenter was mobbed by the deer and they were getting pretty agressive.

Oh. I've never been to Nara. Wanna feed the deer and take a selfie with them tho. Haha.

I've never heard of Yanaka before. I'll have to check it out next time I'm in Tokyo. Thanks!

Thanks and your welcome, @boxcarblue. It's one of the hidden gems of Tokyo and just a few stations away from Ueno :)

Next time I go to the zoo, I'll check it out.

I've seen a show about Aoshima, Japan's cat island, but I'd never heard of Yanka. Thanks for sharing this!

Your welcome, @kunschj! I'd love to visit that island. But since it's far from Tokyo, I went to Yanaka instead :)

Wow. This is very useful. I followed you.

Thanks for following and for giving a paw-sitive comment, @meow-paw! :)

Wow what an awesome tour, thank you for putting it together for Steemit. I watched a video on YouTube once about that cat town, wish I could go NOW!
Have you gone to any cat cafes in Tokyo yet?

Thanks @kotturinn. If you'd consider Hello Kitty café as one of the cat cafes, then yes. Haha. But it's on my list - to go in a real cat café! :)

Yeah, I was talking about a real cat cafe. I've never been either, but I would love to go! Cat paradise!

Love this - goodness I will have to win or steal money to go and see all these lovely places in the world

Thanks @anneke! Chances of winning the jackpot in a lottery is so small tho. We better work smart and invest in crypto to make more money and travel the world :)

Lets hope we make a lot of money eventually on steemit

Wow!!! Awesome post!! I would love to go to cat town and I would def be bringing one of those adorable cats in the striped shirts home with me 🤗 Keep Steeming 🚂 I look forward to your future posts!!! ❤️🐻

Thanks @beartribune! I'm glad to hear that :)

What an absolutely lovely place you've blogged about, I love the theme of the cats, I think it's so cute!

Thanks @sweetsssj! Cats are really paw-esome! I'm glad you liked it :)
