Travel Diaries: Bubbles Dive Resort, Perhentian Besar, Malaysia.
It is located approximately 20 minutes (by speedboat) from Perhentian Kecil and from Besar’s main beach. Kecil in local Malay means “little or small” and Besar means “big or large”. No, you do not need to be a diver to stay.
After spending 3 nights at Senja Bay and waking up to these views, we moseyed over to the larger island.
Who better to ferry us over but Pak Mie, from my previous post about the journey to Perhentian Kecil. There are many “island-ferries” located near the jetty on Coral Beach, but we had promised to get in touch with Pak Mie and intended on keeping that promise.
The ride cost RM25 and we were in for a treat. Pak Mie gave us a mini-tour around Kecil before whisking us off to Bubbles.
The Resort.
Nestled within a private bay on Perhentian Besar (Big Perhentian), Bubbles offers postcard worthy views while in the comfort of nature. The resort is within the wild jungles of the island and isn’t visible from sea! All I saw on approach was a crescent bay of white sand.
The resort has only 20 chalets and prior bookings are advised. Facilities are well maintained and very clean.
Chalet’s are essentially private bungalows with an open air shower!
If you’re looking for somewhere beautiful and secluded, rustic yet comfortable, this is the perfect place. Highly recommended for families and honeymooners! Rooms are great and the food, yummy.
Doesn’t surprise me that they are almost always at capacity. I recommend booking 2 months in advance.
Why is Bubbles my favourite?
The beach is pristine, and because it is the only resort with a private beach, you pretty much have the place to yourself.
Activities
Bubbles offers jungle trekking, kayaking, scuba diving and operates it’s own turtle hatchery! This was the main reason for my stay. You’ll see why in my next post.
I hear diving here is good, although I had bruised my eardrum and couldn’t go into the blue.
Instead I spent my days in hammocks, listening to the lull of waves, eventually falling asleep or succumbing to long snorkels.
WiFi
Is available, but limited to the cafeteria area. I was somehow able to get a strong signal from my hammock on the beach.
Accommodation
A Deluxe Room sleeps 3 and a Family Suite sleeps 5.
More info.
Payment
Upon reservation, we paid RM300 + 3% for deposit within 48hours of receiving the acknowledgement email from Bubbles.
Payment methods are simple enough, you may use a credit card with the provided link upon reservation or bank in the deposit and email the receipt for confirmation.
Now, because getting speedboats from the Kuala Besut jetty and back may be tricky especially if you’re hoping to be on mainland by a particular time (i.e.: flight to catch etc), I highly suggest getting land transfers/speedboat transfers from Bubbles.
How To Get to Bubbles from Kuala Besut or the Airport(s):
Land transfer from:
Kota Bahru Airport- Jetty = RM30/person (1 hours drive)
Kuala Terengganu Airport - Jetty = RM180/taxi (1 hour and a half drive)
Please note that the last boat leaves the Kuala Besut Jetty to the Perhentian Islands at 5pm. (Sea’s are apparently rough after this time)
Speedboat transfer from Kuala Besut Jetty (mainland) to Bubbles:
One Way = RM35/person
Return = RM70/person
Children 3-12 years old = Half price.
It is absolutely crucial that you note the timings for the speedboats, especially if you’re catching a flight.
Speedboat Schedule:
Kuala Besut-Bubbles: Saturday to Thursday; 0830, 1030, 1330. Friday; 0830, 1030, 1430.
Bubbles-Kuala Besut: Daily: 0800, 1200, 1600(only during peak season and weather conditions)
