There are many places I'd wish to visit but sadly the UAE Isn't one of them. Like you said there is just this air of superficiality, like the whole country is fake. There's no culture to it.

Speaking on a tangent, the other place I would feel the same way is urban China. I'm a Chinese descent living in South East Asia. But from my researches and what others told me, it seems like my small town here has a longer Chinese tradition than say Beijing. Would love to visit rural China tho.
