CHEFCHAOUEN | THE BLUE PEARL OF MOROCCO
Without knowing, you might have seen pictures of Chefchaouen or Chaouen already. The blue city of Morocco is world-famous! The blue buildings are therefore a tourist attraction as no other!

Chefchaouen or Chaouen
Chefchaouen is located in the Rif Mountains of Morocco with an absolute amazing nature, it isn’t a typical Moroccan city... It isn’t congested with crowds like Marrakech and is the complete opposite colours of the Sahara Desert. Due to its northern location, the weather in Chefchaouen is cooler in warmer times. This is because of the fact that the mountain village is hidden away high at five hundred meters and therefore touched by some cooling winds.
Why is it blue?
Was it ever a village of smurfs? Has a blue paint factory exploded nearby? Or is there a more logical explanation?
I heard a lot of different theories about why Chefchaouen is blue but nobody really knows why blue in Chefchaouen has become so popular.
Some say it was painted blue by the Jews who settled there after fleeing Hitler, others say it’s to keep the mosquitos away, while some just said it represents the color of the sea.
I’m not sure which version is true, but it seems to have worked out well for Chefchaouen, as it sure looks good blue!
Things to do and see in Chefchaouen
In fact, Chefchaouen is already an attraction in itself!
The colored city center will certainly keep you busy for a few hours. But still, let me sum up some things you shouldn’t miss…
Plaza Uta el-Hammam
The heart of the medina is the shady, cobbled Plaza Uta el-Hammam, which is lined with cafes and restaurants, all serving similar fare. This is a peaceful place to relax and watch the world go by, particularly after a long day of exploration.
Views from the top of the mountain
Sunrise and Sunset in Chefchaouen: Waking up in the early morning, get to the rooftop of your riad and enjoy the most magical sunrise you will see during your trip.
And if you are down in another sunset moment, then climb up all the way to the on a hill located Spanish Mosque where you will have a perfect view over the city.
Markets
The streets twist and wind up and down through the markets, an endless maze of rugs, blankets, leather products, art and clothing.
Kasbah
The kasbah is a heavily restored walled fortress that now contains a lovely garden, a small ethnographic museum, and an even smaller art gallery. The views from the kasbah tower over the medina are a delight.
