Jake's Place - A Celebrity Getaway for the Soul
Jake's Place is a laid back resort of villa's, cottages & Rooms on the Southern coast of Jamaica. Sprawled across the appropriately named Treasure Beach, this certainly is a gem and a treasure to have found. It's even been known to host the odd celebrity or two, however we missed the stay if Kenny G by a few days, apparently.
In contrast to the northern side of the island, the southern coast seems to get a lot less international tourism and as such is the perfect place to escape the chaos and hustle and bustle that you can encounter in the tourist resorts, and the general pressures of life.
In contrast to the calm waters and postcard white sand on the picture perfect beaches of the north, the southern coast of Jamaica has a more rugged decor, with the rough sea dashing against the rocks of the shore and the sand black in places. This part of Jamaica is noticeably less developed also which is essentially its charm, you'll struggle to find anything but the odd local shack selling local produce, which can be a bit of a shock when you are used to the immediate delivery and attainability aspect of the tourism trap in the North. This hotel in contrast to some of the corporate chains of hotel in the north, supports the local community and a big part of their manifesto is giving back to the community of which it is an integral part, and the older I get the more I understand the importance of supporting local people instead of fat cats who pay their employee's poorly and keep profits out of the country.
The hotel adapts a holistic approach to every aspect of your stay, with a seasonal menu of freshly picked, caught and prepared meals on hand and the option to join in daily yoga classes. A lot of guests, like myself however choose to do nothing which is what this part of the world is geared up for.
Despite the option to explore the South Coast, and Kingston not too far away, the option to do nothing really is the main draw to this resort and with humming birds darting through the heavily perfumed gardens, watching them and listening to the waves breaking on the shore ahead of the little cottage that we were staying in, seemed to be the perfect antidote to the busyness of real life.
With an interesting history of its own, the family that own the resort have been local to the area for several decades and even have an interesting connection to Jimmy Cliff, but Ill let you look into that one if it interests you as I don't remember the specifics, and true to the irie vibes that this place evokes, I can't be bothered to look it up!!
In summery, Jakes Place in Treasure Beach in the perfect getaway for those looking for little bit of something special in their lives for a few days, a stay here seemed to soothe my senses and left me springing out of bed ready to take on the rat race again.
Im heading back to Jamaica for a couple of weeks so will be concentrating on blogging my photos and experiences while I there, and over the next week will share pics and stories from previous trips. Please follow @alexabbottphoto to see more and feel free to share and up vote as every little help.
