The ups and downs of van nomadism

Life on the road sure is filled with ups and downs. Murder Dog and I had a great day yesterday with our good friend Danilo Cuellar and his family. Once we parted ways with them, the plan was to drive over to PA and crash for the night somewhere close to the campground that we were going to meet the BipTwins at today.

Unfortunately, it was pouring, visibility was low, and the drive took longer than expected. Then, about 30 minutes out from our destination, we finally cleared the storm but the emissions light came on in the Element and we were suddenly not able to go over 55 mph. We managed to park safely for the night but I knew we were in for an adventure in the morning.

As luck would have it, where we landed ended up being about 6 miles from a Honda dealership. We got here first thing in the morning, gave our sob story, and the folks here were nice enough to squeeze us in despite their packed schedule. Now Murder Dog and I are wandering around this town waiting on the mechanics because we have no other place to go. At least it's not raining anymore...

I know Danilo! Not in person, but on the internet. :) Haven't talked to him for a while.

Great guy. One of my very good friends. Luckily I have had the opportunity to hangout with him IRL a number of times over the past few years.

When all the lights go out, I have a feeling you will be one of those guys that survive...

Thanks! I sure hope so. If nothing else, I'm getting a crash course in prepping for some type of apocalypse.

The other day I went out to talk to this guy who was driving a motorcycle up to a van then disappearing inside. First I just thought it was someone living in one of the college houses since they've just did a switch over in tenants for the school year since he had been coming and going for about three days. I asked him if he was living in his van and he replied sort of in a I am skeptical why you are asking kind of voice. I replied I thought maybe he was one of the college kids and wondered why you'd park in front of my house instead your own. That the motorcycle was quite loud, if he came from the beige house they could choose to drive me crazy every Sunday with their band or park a motorcycle across the street, it'd have to be one or the other but not both. (Since the college houses violate the zoning ordinance by having way to many kids living in them there usually isn't enough parking for all them in front of their house but surely there would be room for a motorcycle) He laughed and said that he was living in the van and he'd move it. He said it seemed like a safe spot to park and I told him he was probably safer then he thought since I stay up until wee hours of the morning blogging in front of a window that overlooks the park. He started asking what sight I blog on and I told him Disqus and a site called Steemit. Seems he blogged on Steemit also. I went away for awhile and when I came back he was gone, then I thought I should have asked him what name he went by on Steemit so I could follow him, he said he traveled around a lot for his job doing production set ups.

Very cool. Van nomads are everywhere. I have come across a number of them in just the two months that I have been out here. So many people seem to be shifting towards this lifestyle, for a variety if reasons. It's quite freeing, in my opinion, so I totally see the draw but, then again, I might be a wee bit biased. ;)

How long have you been living the van life for @abolitionistjay?
