Taipei 101, the tallest building in Taiwan

Taiwan started the construction of Taipei 101 back in 1999 and was completed in 2004, claiming the World's Tallest Building title from our Petronas Twin Tower, Malaysia until 2010 and was later surpassed by Burj Khalifa, the United Arab Emirates afterwards.

Currently (as of this post), Taipei 101 is the 10th tallest building in the world standing at 508-metres (1,667 ft); while Petronas Twin Tower is the 15th tallest building at 451.9-metres (1,483 ft).

Getting There

As an iconic landmark super skyscraper of Taipei 101, easy access to this building is very important and that's why an underground MRT station was built underneath it.

Take the Tamsui(淡水)-Xinyi(信義) Redline bound for Xiangshan 象山, and get off at the Taipei 101/World Trade Center station. It cost NTD25 (NTD20 if you're using the Easy Card) per way from Taipei Main Station, and take estimated 15-20 minutes of travelling time depend on peak/off-peak.

Ticket Purchase & Entrance

You will need to purchase those entrance ticket on the 5th floor of the mall inside Taipei 101 if you wish to go up and it will cost NTD600 per adult and NTD540 per concession/students for each ticket, while online booking will be slightly cheaper and avoid those hefty long queue at the ticket counter via the Klook App (see the image below).

Entrance towards Taipei 101 Observation Decks at 89th floor

They say that the best time to visit the observation decks is 4.30PM-5.00PM, why? Because you'll get enjoy the view in both daylight and night view​, talking about one stone killing two bird 😆 and that's what I did too. After getting our ticket, it's time to take the "World's Fastest Elevator" up to the 89th floor of the observation decks.

Okay, it might not be the World Fastest Elevator now after Shanghai Tower taken the title in​ 2016, but it's still pretty damn​ fast with a travelling vertical speed of 60km/h, you pretty much reach the 89th floor from the entrance (5th floor) in 37 seconds and the best thing is you don't feel it.

Observation Deck & Wind Damper

The Observation Decks of Taipei 101 is located on​ the 88th and 89th floor which provide ​360-degrees unobstructed view of Taipei city from the tower as there's isn't any tall rise building beside it. There's also an Outdoor Observation Deck located on​ the 91st floor but is subjected to weather condition when it's open for the public visit.

Due to earthquake and typhoon being the frequent visitor to Taiwan, Taipei 101 is built to withstand their force by using the world's ​largest and heaviest gigantic wind damper installed right in the middle of the tower at the Observation Decks. This wind damper is weighted at 660-tons (660,000kg), having a diameter of 5.5-metre (18ft) and is been suspended in mid-air​ between 87th floor to 92nd​ floor by 41 thick layers​ of 12.5cm (5-inch) steel bound​ together.

The outdoor​ observation deck is on the 91st floor where you can access through the ​89th floor by taking the stairs, and with Taipei currently in​ winter, is super cold and windy when I got up there. With this high up, it officially becomes​ the highest building that I had been to in my life (as of Jan 2018).
