WHEN TRAGEDY STRIKES

in #tragedy7 years ago (edited)

So long you are a living human in this world, you must have experienced one form of tragedy or the other. Life has a way of throwing us a curve ball which hits us so hard and fast on the side of the head knocking us flat on the ground. Things happen that we ask the usual questions of why me? and what did I do wrong?

Our lives on Earth have been described as times on the mountain as well as times in the valley. We appreciate the mountain top experiences because of the times in the valley. Oftentimes when life seems to be most enjoyable, blessings abound, joy abundant is when tragedy decides to pay us a visit.

We must understand that in spite of whatever comes our way, we almost certainly are not the first to experience it. There is no new tragedy underneath the sun. People have experienced it before and so many of them have rebuilt their lives after the tragedy. Remember there is a slightest possibility of it being worse.

WHAT TO DO WHEN TRAGEDY STRIKES

DO NOT BLAME GOD
image
God does not directly bring tragedy upon us. James 1:3 says let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God", for God cannot be tempted by evil nor does He himself tempt anyone. At the point of creation, everything God made was good. All the tragedies of life are direct and indirect consequences of the fall in the garden.

DRAW STRENGTH FROM OTHERS

True friends can help during time of distress and need. Be careful and cautious with the ones who claim to be friends but are never available during trying moments. A true friend will be empathic and understanding. A true friend will know when to remain silent and just listen and when to talk. A true friend will wall with you, stand beside you, offer help when needed and words of comfort when possible. Find others who have travelled that same road you are travelling. They know what it is like and can empathize with you in ways unknown to others.

DO WHAT YOU CAN BUT MOVE ON
image
When tragedy strikes, catch your breath, pick up the pieces and move on. Consider there are few options for you.

  • You could sit around and have a pity party, thinking how terrible it is that such happened to you but pitying yourself will not change anything. The problem will still exist after the pity party is over.
  • You can play the blame game. Attempting to blame someone whether God, another or yourself will not solve the problem. Pointing finger of blame to everyone who is guilty of blame will not take away the pain, relieve you of the hurt or return things to status quo.
  • You can pause and consider that circumstances could have been worse. Why not express appreciation that it isn't worse than this? Pick up the pieces and move on. Regardless the tragedy, step back, evaluate and reevaluate the situation, count your blessings and move cautiously forward.

TRUST AND HAVE FAITH IN GOD.

God in heaven is powerful. He is able (Ephesians 3:20). He is our friend in time of need, our refuge. We may not be able to make it on our own, but with the help of our Father we can survive. The story is told of a small boy trying to move a heavy piece of wood in their yard. He tugged, grunted, strained and worked diligently but to no avail. Finally in aggravation, he said to his dad (who was close by),
"I just can't move it. I have tried everything and I just can't do it"
The dad asked, "Have you tried everything that you can?"
"Yes Dad" he replied exasperated.
"But you haven't asked me for help", the dad replied. "You haven't tried me".
Have you asked God for help?

CONCLUSION

Until you experience a tragedy, you really do not know. We have lied when speaking to others about the circumstances they faced. We really did not intend to lie but we are actually guilty nevertheless. We have said, "We understand" in conversations with them. The truth was, we did not understand. We should be careful what we say to anyone, especially during times of tragedy.
