Sia is a decentralized cloud storage platform that aims to compete with existing storage solutions. Instead of renting storage from a centralized vendor, Sia users rent storage from one another. Sia retains only the storage contracts concluded between the parties, which define the terms of their agreement. A chain of blocks, similar to Bitcoin, is used for this purpose.
By entering into a contract, a storage provider (also known as a host) undertakes to store a customer's data and to periodically submit evidence of their continued storage until the contract expires. The host is compensated for each proof that he submits and penalized for missing proof. As this evidence is publicly verifiable (and publicly available in the blockchain), network consensus can be used to automatically enforce storage contracts. Importantly, this means that clients do not need to personally verify the evidence; they can simply upload their files and let the network do the rest.
Sia's currency is Siacoin. The amount of Siacoins will increase permanently, and all the supply will be given to the miners who validate the blocks. The first block created 300,000 pieces. This number will decrease by 1 piece per block, until a minimum of 30,000 pieces per block is reached.
