The story of Weeping rock in Mount Spil
The story of Niobe is one of the most tragic Greek myths.
Niobe was a women who lives in Magnesia(Today known as Manisa) and she had 14 children. 7 daughters and 7 sons. She was really proud of herself. One day she made fun of the Goddess Leto who is the mother of only two children. Twins Apollo(the God of music and light) and Artemis(the Goddess of hunting and nature). When the twins heard it they got angry. Apollo killed all of her sons and Artemis killed the daughters. Niobe cried for days and nights and begged Zeus to take her pain. Zeus felt sorry for her and turned her into a stone.
Even as a stone Niobe continued to cry.
The water comes from the big stones in Spil is the tears of the woeful mother, they say....
