RE: Jewish Torah translation of old testament

in #torah7 years ago

Shalom @yesiknow,

I'm a teacher of Jewish Studies. No 'Torah' is the name for the first five books of the Bible.

Bereshiet (Genesis)
Shemot (Exodus)
Bemidbar (Numbers)
Vayikra (Leviticus)
Devarim (Deuteronomy)

The writings we call the Ketuvim and the prophetic books the Neviim, derived from Navi which means 'prophet'.
What Christians call the Old Testament, we call the Tanakh which is an acronym for Torah, Neviim and Ketuvim.

Some other Hebrew names for Bible books are:
Yehoshua (Josua)
Tehilim (Psalms)
Mishlei (Proverbs)
Kohelet (Eclesiastes)
Iyov (Job)
Zecharyah (Zechariah)
Michah (Micha)
Yeshayahu (Isaiah)
Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah)
Yechezkel (Ezekiel)
Shemuel Alef (1 Samuel)
Shemuel Bet (2 Samuel)
Chaggai (Haggai)
Nechemyah (Nehemiah)
Melachim Alef (1 Kings)
Melachim Bet (2 Kings)
Divrey Hayamim Alef (1 Chronicles)
Divrey Hayamim Bet (2 Chronicles)
Shoftim (Judges)
