Reflections on Tolstoy and Russia

in #tolstoy8 years ago

Tolstoy began somewhat simply and normally, but writing and an open mind soon brought him anonymous fame. He continued to be honest about what he saw, perhaps saying what convention and tradition had hidden. He noticed both the beauty in the routine and the flaws in his world.

I cannot judge the dexterity of his writing but I have read store names and signs in Moscow. It's a magical beautiful place and reading any little Russian word warms my heart. I've been out in the middle of nowhere and their buildings and houses have character. They love classical music, the arts and ballet.

I've seen sidewalk tables filled with books just ready to be sold or traded, with snow gently falling. This is a country influenced by Tolstoy, his works and all literature.

As time went on he became more liberal in his views, not understanding why the everyday peasant had to live void of education, opportunity and certain beauty. He taught reading and writing to children from the village.

Tolstoy's Fatherland has become a very educated country who has passed through and overcome much. There is much goodness, depth and love of literature despite hardship. Russians continue to evolve and adapt to every situation. Some I have found to be the most generous of people.
