Was John Titor a time Traveler?
Carry a gas can with you for when the car leaves you stranded. Until forever.
This is the phrase with which John Titor, a presumed time traveler, said goodbye to the people in March 2001.It all started on November 2, 2000, when TimeTrivel_0 user wrote his first post in the Time Travel Institute forum. At that time the theme of his comments focused exclusively on the technology needed to make travel in time. He described this time machine as if it already existed, defining it as a temporary displacement device of stationary mass, whose operation was based on the use of two micro-singularities to jump from one date to another. To work, according to TimeTravel_0, it had to be composed of 6 parts
- Two magnetic containers for micro-singularities
- An electron injection distributor to alter the mass and gravity of the micro singularities.
- A cooler and an X-ray ventilation system.
- Gravity sensors or a lock of variable gravity.
- 4 cesium watches
- 3 computers.
In his explanations TimeTravel_0 referred to a model proposed by Frank J. Tipler that postulated that if a cylinder sufficiently dense and long rotated over its longitudinal axis at a speed close to the speed of light, it would allow that if another object spiraled around itself it would grant the access to travel forward or backwards in time depending on the direction of rotation. This model is theoretical since the length, density and velocity of the required cylinder would be so large that ordinary matter can not withstand it.
In one of his posts, he said that CERN scientists would discover the scientific underpinnings of time travel in 2001, around six months after he returned to his time, after the LHC was put into operation and small black holes were formed due to first collisions of particles exposed at high energies.
The rest of the forum users asked about the origin of this knowledge. TimeTravel_0 then confessed that he was a time traveler, coming from the year 2036.
In January 2001, he opened an account at the Art Bell forums of the Coast to Coast program in the United States. This is where he used the name John Titor for the first time. Or maybe not. Someone with the same name had sent two faxes in 1998 to the Coast to Coast show, claiming that time travel had been invented in 2034.
On this occasion he sent the photographs of the machine, which was mounted inside a Corvette model of 1977. The objective should have been to easily move around, because the machine wouldn't pass as unnoticed due to its aspect, as you can see in the next photo. And it does not help that the model chosen is two years after the time of the jump (1975).
He also explained that he was a military man from 2036, who was assigned the mission to travel until 1975 to recover an IBM computer model 5100.
The interest in this particular model was because it worked with an APL interpreter that was compatible with that of the IBM Mainframe. In the future they needed to be able to run utilities to correct the 2038 effect , caused by the time accounting in 32-bit signed integer and that may be a potential source of errors on January 19 of 2038, when this counter overflows.
Many proponents of the truthfulness of John Titor's story believe that this is proof of this. If it was not, how was someone to know that compatibility? Truth be told, this was no secret. IBM technicians must have thought that it was faster to reuse the APL interpreter than they already had to write a new one. This was public prior to the appearance of John Titor.
The question that immediately arises is: why bother to travel back in time to recover an archaic piece of hardware that could be emulated perfectly today ?. John's response was shocking: "in the war many computers and software tools were lost."And what war was that? According to Titor, the war began to fester in 2004 with disorders caused after the presidential elections, which ended up triggering a civil war in 2008. In which Titor himself being only 11 years old fought in that war, according to him. The American civil war was interrupted by the intervention of Russia. In 2015 Russia attacked US, European and Chinese targets with nuclear weapons, in what would be the world's shortest war in history. The United States responded by destroying Russia and winning the war, although China, Europe and one of the sides of the American Civil War were destroyed.
As you can see, none of the predictions that Titor published have come true, but that does not mean anything, thanks to an intelligent argument put forward by this phony. When asked about the temporary paradoxes that might lead to a temporary trip to the past, such as meeting his father and killing him before he was born, Titor said the correct physical theory was the one of Everett-Wheeler-Graham ,according to which any possible event are occurring simultaneously in parallel multiverses, and that no paradox is possible. The probability that something is occurring at one point in one of those multiverses is 100%. Titor jumped to a temporary point other than his own timeline, but at the time of doing so, that timeline changed so that anything that happens in it, ours, may be different from what was experienced in that of John Titor's . Ingenious, right?
The catch of this explanation, is that if the timelines are separated, to what time line did Titor jump to in March of 2001? If it is ours, you will find a world completely different from the one he left behind. And if it is his, how could he identify it among the infinite possible Time lines that this physical theory postulates? There are many other inconsistencies in his statements, such as a photograph he showed on one occasion saying,
This is a photo taken in the autumn of 2035 during my training. Show my instructor with a laser pointer outside the vehicle in operation. The beam is being bent by the gravitational field generated by the distortion unit. The beam is visible from the smoke that comes from your cigar.
However, the light coming into the camera from the interior of the vehicle is not distorted. You can see the window frame perfectly right behind the laser beam. A gravitational force capable of twisting the light thus would make it physically impossible for this man to hold that cigar. By contrast, this trick can easily be achieved with a fiber optic segment.
Another fault in the argument is the sequence of jumps. He originally jumped to 1975 to retrieve IBM 5100 portable computer, but instead of returning to 2036 he decided to visit the year 2000 for personal reasons, to collect some photographs he lost in the civil war, and to visit his family. But then, who sent the faxes to Art Bell in 1998?
In spite of all these incongruities, the story increased in popularity following the disappearance of Titor from the forums. Even many of his post were lost, but thanks to the collaboration of other users, who had saved them on their hard disks, they were able to rebuild his statements.
On May 22, 2003, Oliver Williams registered the domain johntitor.com, spreading his conversations there along with some merchandising. In August 2004 Oliver published on his website the name of the lawyer representing the Titor family for everything related to legal issues relating to the John Titor brand. His name is Lawrence H. Haber.
Larry Haber is a Florida based attorney. In the past he has provided legal services to Disney and Universal Studios Florida. He represents a client called Kay Titor, apparently the mother of John, although she has never appeared in public.
In 2008 an Italian television program, "Voyager - Ai confini della conoscenza" , hired a private investigator, Milke LInch, to discover who John Titor really was.
The researcher could verify that there was no trace of the Titor family in the past. He tracked the money and found an organization called the John Titor Foundation, established on September 16, 2003. It had no headquarters. Just a post office in Kissimmee. This company obtains funds from the sale of merchandising and books related to this story. Its CEO is Larry Haber. However Larry's profile does not denote having the necessary knowledge to have invented this story, and being able to respond in real time in IRC chats, so he turned his gaze to his brother John Haber, with a broad career as a coach in IT. The researcher's conclusion is that Joh Titor is John Haber.
About the cover photo Although on many websites John Titor is often related to this person wearing eyeglasses that opens this entry, both have nothing to do with each other. This is a photograph taken during the reopening of the South Fork Bridge after a flood, taken in 1941. The original you can see it in the virtual museum of Canada. In fact the person with glasses has a contemporary look, with that haircut, without sideburns, with a printed t-shirt and with what looks like a camera in his hands. His attire is nothing extraordinary at that time. Sunglasses with side shields were already worn, the jersey was a hockey team called Montreal Maroons, and what he has in his hands could be perfectly a camera of the era .
