Persian fables tell the story of a king who wanted a way to maintain himself aware at all times of the ever changing human condition so he had a ring engraved with the words

"This too shall pass"

It's meant as a reality check to give one strength when things are bad but also to keep one aware that the joyful moment will pass.

I could be viewed as an optimist and sometimes that feels like a defect, like I constantly need to wake up to actual reality, smell the ashes and stop dreaming of better times and better places.

I like to view this optimism as a perpetual way of setting goals in life, even if they are too high. I much rather achieve half of a way too big of a target than give up trying to better myself and my surroundings. Is that naive?

And by the argument that everything passes anyway, why even bother?

We need the contrast, the opposites, the bitter and the sweet. We need accept both sides and respect them equally.

"This too shall pass"

Yeah, if you have the fortitude to wait for whatever shit to pass. I know you might not mean that exactly but that line was all I could focus on and it's a timely advice (?) that makes me want to force things to pass.

  • your loyal rant reader

It's not meant as advice, nor is it meant to be thought about only when things are bad. Rather it's a call back to reality, a reminder that everything does pass.

I took it as an advice. Because that's what people say all the time. Don't worry it'll pass. Or however that shit goes

"This too shall pass," is but an idiom that is meant to ground the one reciting the sentiment. When in the midst of even the most chaotic of moments when our thoughts are spread across an incomprehensible web, this statement can be a mantra to help refocus the thoughts. It is meant to show that nothing is permanent. As @ragequit mentioned, its not just for the bad times. When we become engulfed with our greatest of accomplishments and lose sight of everything else, "this too shall pass," is a reminder that even the highest of towers falls in time.

At first, I was confused as why it was being explained to me. I know it's an idiom. But reading the comment before this again, I guess it may have sounded defensive. And I was a little surprised (and hurt) because Rq and I have talked like this on discord and there never seemed like an issue. It became comfortable enough to be able to just talk without censoring my words and know that it wasn't taken offensively. I'd have used shiz but from the past discussions with Rq in discord, we've discovered it meant another thing entirely. Or was it someone with a dim blue-green name? There aren't many of us in quiet room. But since Rq was also liking this, I'm sorry Rq if you misunderstood it and feel like it's an attack. No, it was just me being moved by your article. Like I said, when you were saying you might not get an eyeball to this, just drop me a link and you know I'll support you. But you know my life is ------ and my words can be on the cussy-side and I am easily influenced by you (hence I posted one post I was hesitating to post) so I talk the way we talk in Discord with all the cuss and whatnot. I'm sorry I forgot this is NOT the chatroom. I guess I should have put a "lol" or "lmao" there somewhere so you'd know it was simply a comment. But I guess I got too comfortable. In any case, will remember to keep my thoughts to myself. Good luck on your own journey and keep steeming on! :) :) :)

Perhaps there was miscommunications all around - I certainly for one was not taking your comment as being defensive. I sensed a bit of confusion with the sentiments expressed herein, but certainly no defensiveness.

Blessings! #SteemOn!
