TIL: The word Assassin has derived over centuries from the word Hashish (yes, that hashish)! Who would of thought?!

Hello Fellow Steemians! Check this out… In the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries in Syria there was a drug fuelled, ‘crazy’ and murderous Shi’ite Islamic sect called the Nizaris.

They were opposed to the beliefs of another Islamic group called the Sunnis and they were also opposed to European Christian Crusaders who were spreading the Christian word.

The Nizaris were known for their use of hashish as a pastime. They were therefore known as ‘hassassins’, meaning ‘hashish user’ in the Arabic language.

They launched attacks on the Sunni Muslim groups as well as on the Christian Crusaders. They used stealth to kill suddenly and operated like secret agents.

On the return of the Crusaders to Europe they would tell stories of the ‘hassassins’ back in Syria. The word ‘hassassin’ evolved into Assassin in European languages in is still in use today of course!
