How sad! I am so sorry to hear that. I have to admit, I drove roads like that at a controlled speed that was within the recommendation, and I honestly don't have the guts to fly around those curves with no barriers.

While the barriers won't hold a speeding car, it would make me feel better. Surely it is not the $12 or $!500 that drives them. It must be the adrenaline!
