Losing embarrassing baggage

in #thoughts5 years ago

I'm on the move again today with a very tight schedule and colleagues in tow, so no meetup. I was planning on contacting a few potential locals who may have been able to swing it, however I can't guarantee I will be anywhere at any particular time. Perhaps next trip it will be manageable. Hopefully I can have more than a single night.

This is not my carryon. It is the bag of an elderly gentleman who was sitting nearby on the short skip flight to Helsinki. It reminded me of one of the first time I travelled and used a suitcase that belonged to my father originally; a brown, 1960s, vinyl thing that closed with a buckle strap. I remember being embarrassed.

It is funny what jogs our memories and while it feels like it, I believe there is no real random thought, they all have a catalyst of some kind. A smell, a sound, a feeling or an image that evokes a reaction, a mental search and discovery that gets processed into consciousness.

How much of what we think is ours?

I was talking with a colleague about abilities yesterday, and how much of the ownership is unknowable to us. Can we actually pick our core personality or the drive required to push ourselves to learn? How much of our demeanor can we affect?

Some people have a sunny disposition, some are negative, some are never happy, some are predispositioned for overreaction. You?

While we have greater or lesser bases, I do think that we are able to affect our behaviors and outcomes, even if it means "faking" it. We are able to learn new strengths and compensate for our weaknesses as long as we can identify what they are. We are unlikely to have strength in all necessary factors to be successful at what we aim to accomplish, but that doesn't mean we can't close gaps through self development.

Often we use the natural gaps as excuses as to why we can't do something, "if only I was..." but that is a bit of a cop-out as even if the odds are against us, the potential to attempt it is always there. I guess what holds us back the most is the fear of failure and the loss of face that may come publicly. The embarrassment.

Ever thought how many opportunities we may miss because we didn't want to face potential embarrassment?

At least when I was young, I am near certain I missed a great deal of experience that I would have likely benefited from and loved, but didn't do. I might assume that is part of growing up, but it may not be.

It could very well be that someone's ability to be embarrassed is a born trait, and some people do not suffer from it as readily. This means that they could be more willing to try and fail and in so doing, develop a broader or deeper range of skills that would provide compounding future possibilities.

A lot of what we value in our person is largely out of our control, some completely. I have always found it weird that people are proud of their skin colour or IQ, as if it is a skill they acquired through hard work.

Oooh...

Talking of being reminded.

Time for the next flight.

I think a lot of the failure, and fear of failure can be over come. Of course I did not feel that way 30 years ago, but do now. When we try to learn something new, we look at what others did, we look at that one successful technique, or we are only taught one technique. Some subjects I learn best through books, others through hands on, others by being shown how to. When ever I want to learn something new or try something new I now stop and look at several techniques, and try to develop my own to have a happy outcome. I am a strong believer in "if at first you don't succeed, try try again", but use a different technique after all repeating the same thing and expecting a different outcome is not a healthy thing to do.

Maybe part of the maturing process is having the opportunity to try and then refine learning processes.

I have a sense that the try isn't as steong as it was in society, the try again almost nonexistent, and the different technique is banging the head against the same wall.

I can honestly relate to being embarrassed by things that shame me now. Can I have a do-over?

This was a heavy thought for a light read. You always know where to aim.

Thanks again and have a great day!

I am pretty sure that given a do over, I would have had more girlfriends ;D perhaps being tempered by youthful embarrassment protects us?

Those colleagues you have in tow...They carrying the bags for the great man or just making sure your every need is catered for? 😊

I wish. I think I will be carrying their bags. I did bring chocolate for my clients though, so they better be nice to me.

If they are not nice grab dem chocolates back with an imperious look on your face and say, "...and I'm taking these back!"

You need to whip those colleagues into gear too mate..."Heft dem bags! No slacking now, c'mon!"

I am just the trainer - if it all goes to hell, they have to deal with it.

I think normally the chocolate transfer goes the other way from around this area.

I get chocolates sometimes. Got a really huge gift box hamper thing from BDM from one of our insurance suppliers...I think she likes me though...I reckon she'd carry my bags for sure...I made sure she saw my wedding ring...But I took the chocolates anyway. Ah yes, good times. Good times. 😂

Don't mind me, I'm in a funny mood. 😂

just give a sign if you are ever in switzerland, I will be in Finland in early FEB for a convention if you are around for a coffee

Haven't managed Switzerland yet. Will you be in Helsinki? I am a couple hundred kms north.

yea, it will be a congress in Helsinki. Well if you are close by chance it would be cool to catch up

Give me some warning and I will see if I can do a day from the Helsinki office.

We only want what we haven't got. Which probably means we'll never truly be happy with our lot and will wish we had the perceived advantage that someone else has.
That suitcase is lovely, though. It's funny how perceptions change with age and experience. As you get older you have more appreciation for older, well crafted things which have lasted the years. Or is that just me?

It was quite nice, the problem was that it wasn't really made for comfortable travel, and the poor old guy seemed to struggle with it. It didn't have wheels.

Ah yes, wheels was the best thing they did for suitcases. Except the early ones when they just added them onto the narrow edges of original style cases. They just tipped over too easily.

Which is not?
