Bible thought: Everybody wants the good will of the ruler, but only from the LORD can you get justice. Proverbs 29:26
The Book of Proverbs with its wisdom invites us to reflect on what is the best way to live, and therefore leaves an important thought: "Everybody wants the good will of the ruler, but only from the LORD can you get justice" Proverbs 29:26.
It is logical, the Book of Proverbs teaches, that no one wants to have the King or the highest ruler as an enemy, the proverb says that nothing is better than having powerful friends, but then the phrase says something else, friends, no matter how good they are, do not ensure happiness and true goods for man, such as peace and prosperity because they have an origin and that is God.
And a very important example of this teaching is the story about the life of Tobit, in the Book that bears his name in the Bible, who for burying his Israelite brothers during the exile in Nineveh was persecuted by the tyrant Sennacherib, the most powerful man in the world at that time, but because of his trust in God, Tobit emerged triumphant from all dangers. Tobit was in every sense a man endowed with extraordinary gifts, uncommon in his time.
This phrase taught in the Book of Proverbs in other words is a similar expression of a previous phrase: "Fearing any human being is a trap, but confiding in the LORD keeps anyone safe" Proverbs 29:25. Having fear of God is the most important thing, the Bible constantly teaches, and those who lose this for the love of riches lose their relationship with the spiritual world. In fact, the sapiential literature summarizes man's moral duties in a very simple way: "Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man" Ecclesiastes 12:13. The gift of fear of god is defined as constancy, firmness, devotion, and equanimity.
Tobit as a biblical example is a clear example that one should not fear a powerful man more than God, even if he is a king or a tyrant, God ultimately, due to his wisdom and goodness, is the true protector of man. The sapiential literature, such as in this case the Book of Proverbs, is a precedent of the teachings of wisdom of Jesus, that illuminate reason and lead man to true knowledge.
