Introduction of THETA (1) – Future of the video streaming industry to learn through Theta.
Hello.
Today we’ll see how the THETA and THETA network can transform the video streaming industry in the future.
Currently, ‘Youtube’ is the strongest runner of video streaming. Let’s first see how Youtube has achieved the number one spot in the industry today. Prior to Youtube, streaming sites uploaded videos of AVI and MPG extensions to the server as it was, so the burden on the server was enormous. Also, this method did not use much because the loading speed was long. Youtube, however, has a new history by dramatically lowering this burden with the technology of playing videos in Flash. Since then Google has taken over Yotube, and now youtube has grown into a tremendous service. However, there was a lot of trouble until this YouTube became the present Youtube. The biggest problem in the early days was that there was no revenue in Youtube, because people uploaded videos on Youtube a lot and the sever could not afford the traffic and therefore Yotube could not upload an advertisement. This over-traffic has annoyed youtube, and Youtube records a deficit of 500 billion a year by 2010. Today’s Youtube has expanded its servers, so there are plenty of ads and the server is stable. But as you can see from YouTube’s past cases, the success and failure of video streaming depends on whether the content provider can get a server that can handle the video’s traffic. If Google had not continued to expand its server in a situation where it is constantly recording deficits, YouTube would not exist.
But the problem about video’s traffic I mentioned earlier is not over yet. Currently, the video industry is moving toward VR streaming beyond 720p, 1080p, and 4k.

As you can see from the picture above, it will not long before we could see basketball game at home through VR live streaming as if you came directly to the arena. If you can watch the PyeongChang Olympic Games held in Korea in real time from home through VR streaming, can you imagine how many people would watch that VR streaming? What if it is possible that put an ad on a VR streaming that the world is watching? Perhaps there will be a big change in the video streaming market and the advertising market.
This is not a distant future. Currently, e-sports games such as LoL, battle of grounds are being actively uploaded through streaming services such as Youtube and Twitch, and the market is getting bigger. But can Yotube and Twitch be able to handle this VR streaming even after a lot of VR games have been released? - Here, THETA offers a solution.

Today’s video streaming services provide streaming services through centralized server. This traditional approach will incur a tremendous amount of money because the company has to build and continually expand its server infrastructure. It will not be enough for VR streaming to the present server.
The figure above outlines the structure of theta protocol briefly. Theta tries to solve the problem by building a peer-to-peer environment away from the existing centralized server infrastructure. As shown in the figure above, there is some intermediate cache nodes, which lends bandwidth to the server. These cache nodes lend bandwidth to the server and receive compensation as THETA tokens. Who are the cache nodes? It's the viewers. Viewers who are watching video can become cache nodes using the remaining resources of their devices. Just watching the video, you can get THETA. An example of a similar service is Torrent. If you download a movie through a torrent, your computer downloads the movies data from other people and sends movie data to others at the same time. When a sufficient number of nodes in the theta network, content providers can get enough bandwidth without increasing the number of centralized servers. Did you get the insight for this project?
But here you can ask why Blockchain is used. In the blockchain, there is a concept of compensation. It is often called “mining” in blockchain. One of the problems with the torrent service, peer-to-peer file transfer protocol, is that people are making what they call a “dine and dash”. Even if people have to give back as much as they got it, after they download the movie, they delete the file seed. Because people do not like to consume their computer resources. This is happening because there is no adequate compensation system. So, theta solved it by using the compensation concept of blockchain.
While the torrent is weak in reward concepts, the theta network provides motivation to allow more people to stay on the network as nodes by rewarding theta. This compensation mechanism makes the network more robust. The important thing is that through the theta network, the content provider can relieve the burden on the traffic and viewers can get the rewards. As more and more video streaming traffic increases in internet network, I am confident that theta project will grow explosively.
#THETA-TEAM
The current project is a project that many companies are interested in. Typically, Samsung and Sonic are investing in the THETA project and Samsung VR has concluded agreements with theta to develop together. The CEO and CTO, who heads the THETA team, also lead the 360 VR streaming site SLIVER.tv and has a lot of business experience with video streaming. The adviser includes a number of experienced and influential people, including Youtube co-founder Steve Chan and co-founder Justin Kan on Twitch TV. THETA is one of the big projects I’m looking forward to.
