WILL TO SURVIVE VS. WILL TO POWER

Untuk mengisi hari yang panjang karena harus berada di rumah sebab Covid19, saya coba menghibur diri dengan menonton kembali film favorit saya, Transformers. Meski telah menonton dua kali, saya tidak bosan juga menikmati film keren ini.

Namun kali ini ada yang menarik dari hasil saya menonton film itu, yakni perkataan Starscream kepada Megatron di bagian akhir film Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen (2009), yang saya jadikan kutipan di atas: “Not to call you a coward, Master, but sometimes cowards do survive.” Apa yang menarik dari perkataan itu?

Sebelum menguraikan arti penting kata-kata itu, mari kita lihat terlebih dahulu konteks di mana kalimat itu diucapkan. Perkataan itu muncul atau dikatakan beberapa saat sebelum lawan-lawan Optimus menyadari kekalahan kelompoknya dalam pertempuran melawan Optimus cs. Ketimbang ikut binasa bersama rekan-rekannya yang lain, si Starscream memberi saran kepada pemimpin tertinggi para Decepticons untuk melarikan diri. Ia menyadari bahwa para Decepticons tidak mungkin menang lagi. Oleh karena itu, ketimbang akhirnya binasa, ia lebih memilih untuk tetap bertahan hidup (survive) meski untuk itu ia dan kelompoknya akan dicap sebagai pengecut, karena melarikan diri dari pertempuran di saat-saat terakhir.

Apa yang bisa disimpulkan dari fenomena yang terjadi dalam bagian terakhir film itu?

Apa yang kemudian jelas tergambar dari bagian akhir film itu adalah bahwa si pengucap dan pemimpin Decepticon itu akhirnya melarikan diri. Mereka kalah dalam pertempuran dan menjadi pecundang, namun mereka tetap hidup. Ya, dorongan untuk tetap hidup mengalahkan dorongan untuk menjadi pemenang dalam pertempuran itu; dorongan untuk bertahan hidup mengalahkan dorongan untuk berkuasa. Dari sini dapat ditarik kesimpulan: dorongan untuk survive (bertahan hidup) adalah dorongan paling mendasar dari makhluk hidup. Dan, mungkin untuk sementara, hal ini dapat digeneralisasi sebagai fenomena yang terjadi pada semua makhluk hidup. Seburuk apa pun kondisinya—i.e. kalah bertempur dan melarikan diri hingga pantas dicap sebagai pengecut, dalam kasus film di atas--tetap bertahan hidup akan merupakan dorongan yang mengalahkan dorongan-dorongan yang lain. Dengan kata lain, makhluk hidup akan memilih untuk tetap hidup ketimbang binasa, meski untuk itu ia harus berada dalam kondisi yang terburuk atau “tidak diinginkan.”

Saya pernah membaca beberapa berita yang mengabarkan remaja yang melakukan bunuh diri hanya karena hal-hal yang “sepele”: putus cinta, dikhianati pacar, tidak mampu membayar uang sekolah, di-bully kawan-kawan sendiri, dst. Saya heran: mengapa hal yang “sepele” seperti itu bisa mengalahkan dorongan yang paling mendasar dari makhluk hidup, yakni dorongan untuk bertahan hidup?

To fill a long day because I have to be at home because of Covid19, I try to entertain myself by watching my favorite movie, Transformes. Even though I have watched it twice, I am not bored of enjoying this cool film.

However, this time there is something interesting about my results from watching the film, namely Starscream's words to Megatron at the end of the film Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen (2009), which I quote above: "Not to call you a coward, Master, but sometimes cowards do survive. " What is interesting about those words?

Before explaining the significance of these words, let's first look at the context in which the sentence was pronounced. Those words appeared or said moments before Optimus's opponents, Decepticons, realized the defeat of their group in the battle against Optimus et all. Instead of perishing with his other comrades, the Starscream advises the highest leader of the Decepticons to escape. He realized that the Decepticons could not win again. Therefore, rather than finally perishing, he prefers to survive, even though for that he and his group will be labeled as cowards, because they fled the battle at the last moment.

What can be concluded from the phenomenon that occured in the last part of the film?

What then becomes clear from the final part of the film is that the Decepticons leader finally escaped. They lost the battle and became losers, but they still alive. Yes, the drive to live trumps the will to be victorious in battle; the will to survive trumps the will to power. From this it can be concluded: the will to survive is the most basic drive of living things. And, perhaps for the time being, this could be generalized as a phenomenon which occurs in all living things. No matter how bad the conditions are — i.e. losing the battle and running away that deserving of being labeled a coward, in the case of the film above -- staying alive would be the impulse that trumps the rest. In other words, a living being will choose to survive rather than perish, even though for this he must be in the worst or "undesirable" condition.

I have read several news in newspapers that report teenagers committing suicide because of “trivial” things: breaking up, being betrayed by their girl/boyfriends, being unable to pay school fees, being bullied by their own friends, and so on. I wondered: why could such a "trivial thing" overcome the most basic urge of living things, namely the will to survive?
